Seasonal Rainfall and Temperature Outlook for the period January to April 2023
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Department of Meteorological Services (DMS) has reviewed the state of the global climate systems and updated the rainfall prospects for the months of January to April 2023.
During the second half of the season, from January to April 2023, most parts of the country will receive normal to above normal rains with the south western parts receiving above normal rainfall. Temperatures will be normal with a tendency to below normal countrywide.
Generally, a moderately wet season is expected with the southwestern parts being wetter than normal during the last half of the season.
JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH AND APRIL 2023
Ngamiland, Chobe Central, Northeast, Southern, Southeast, Kgatleng, Kweneng and Ghanzi Districts will receive normal to above normal rainfall. Temperatures will be normal to below normal. Normal rainfall ranges from 140mm over Ghanzi to 300 mm over Chobe. Average temperature ranges from 31˚C to 33˚C.
Kgalagadi District is expected to receive above normal rainfall. Temperatures will be normal to below normal. Normal rainfall ranges from 90mm to 110mm. Average temperature is 33˚C.
ADVISORY
The aim of this rainfall and temperature outlook is for it to be used for the benefit of policy-making-decisions in the climate sensitive sectors for socio-economic purposes as well as to manage risk arising from climate variability and climate change.
The outlook is relevant only for seasonal time scale and relatively large areas. Local and month-to-month variations might occur as the season progresses. Users are therefore strongly advised to contact the Department of Meteorological Services for interpretation of this forecast, finer details and additional guidance.
