Reiseroute Namibia juni 2017

Hallo,
Wir sind ein Familië (mein man und ich und 2 Söhne (15 jahren)) aus Gent (Belgien). Wir sind neu hier und planen unsere erste Reise zu Afrika (Namibië).
Ich habe schon viel gelesen ins Forum! Meine Deutschkenntnisse sind ausreichend um die tolle Reiseberichte zu verstehen, aber es ist nicht leicht für mich auf Deutsch zu schreiben. Ich möchte gerne in Englisch weiter gehen. Natürlich können Sie auf Deutsch antworten!
We have already booked our flight from Frankfurt to Windhoek (30/06/2017). We are spending 3 weeks in Namibië.
We consider to book a 4x4 hillux car (with 2 rooftents) by Safari car rental. I read very good comments about them!
We'd like to combine camping and farmhouses (we find the lodges too expensive). We like nature, animals and walking.
Our route:
- arrival Windhoek 5h30
- Kalahari (1 night) (Bagatelle Ranch farm) (Bushmen walk??)
- Keetmanshoop (1 night)(Quivertree forest)
- Fish river (1 night)(Hobas camping)
- Tiras mountains (1 night)(Koiimasis or Namtib)
- Sesriem/Sossuvlei (1 night)
- Naukluft (1 night) : olive trail (Naukluft camp) or Quivertree gorge trail (Bullsport)???
- drive to Swakopmund : Spreetshoogtepass / Gamsbergpass?
- Swakopmund (3 nights): boot tour, Tommy's living desert tour, quad riding (although I think our sons are too young to drive?), Welwitschia drive?
- visit Cape Cross; Spitzkoppe (1 night)
- Twyfelfontein (1 night)
- Kamanjab (Cheeta farm?) or Palmwag? (1 night)
- Etosha park (4 nights) : Olifantsrus-Okaukuejo-Halali-Onguma; or we spend the first 2 nights in Okaukuejo and take the Anderson gate instead of the Galton gate?
- 2 nights in Waterberg area or route Outjo-Omaruro?

We still have 2 nights to fill in.

But I have some concerns:
- Is it worth it the drive to the Fish river canyon, just to do some little walks/view points? The drive to the Tiras mountains the next day will be also very long?!
- We'd like to visit the San people and a Himba village, but like many tourists I have a strange feeling about it... I read about Marius (camp Aussicht) on the forum: is the visit to the Himba's there maybe less touristic?
- Is it worth it to spend the extra 2 nights in Purros or Opuwo? Or more nights in Damaraland? I think Caprivi is too far.

Any suggestions for the route or accomodations are wellcome!!

Hallo Ilse, Filip, Robbe und Seppe,
ich kann Christian nur zustimmen. Wir waren im Juli das erste mal in Namibia. Wir hatten die erste Nacht in der Nähe von Windhoek (Auas Game Lodge), dann Mariental, Quivertreeforest, Fishriver (2 Nächte), dann Aus (2 Nächte) DAS war schon ein sehr straffes Programm und wir hatten wenig Zeit zum Genießen. Fishriver Canyon für einen Tag halte ich für sinnlos. Da sitzt ihr stundenlang im Auto, um dann einmal in den Canyon zu gucken. Bitte unterschätz nicht den unbkannten Straßenzustand, den Linksverkehr, die Müdigkeit nach einem Nachtflug usw.
Anschließend waren wir im Sossuvlei "Nächte, dann Walvis Bay, Swakop (2 Nächte), Erongogebirge, Damaraland (2Nächte), Rund um Etosha (3 Nächte), 2 Waterberg und dann Windhoek. Also eine ähnliche Runde wie ihr. Dafür hatten wir 22 Tage und diese Tage waren vollgepackt. Das waren

km!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Auf der Karte ist es einem gar nicht klar wie Groß das Land ist. 3 Wochen ist das Minimum für soe eine Runde, finde ich: Unsere Tochter hat ganz schön gemeckert über die vielen Stunden Autofahrt. Ich fand es nie langweilig, weil die LAndschaft so schön ist, aber Kinder finden das einfach langweilig.
Wir werden nächstes Jahr wieder hinfliegen, aber ich mußte unsere Tochter versprechen, daß wir keine langen Etappen mehr machen und länger an einem Ort bleiben.
Ich fand unsere Tour dieses gut so wie sie war, Besser wäre aber eine weiter Nacht zwischen Aus und Sussusvlei und eine Nacht zwischen Vlei und Walvis Bay gewesen. Die Strecken ziehen sich. An den wirklich sehenswerten Orten solltet ihr dringend 2 Nächte einplanen. Das wird totale Hetze. Rechnet damit, dass ihr auf mancher Strecke nur eine Durchschnitsgeschwindigkeit von 50 km/h habt. Man kann oft nur langsam fahren oder man will ja mal anhalten und gucken oder muß halt mal 😉
Ich habe gedacht daß ich das alles eingeplant hätte und dann hat die Realität mich doch eines anderen belehrt.

Das ist eine typische namibianische STraße

Concerning driving on the left side, that will be no issue, we travelled already several times in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England.
We experienced already what it is to drive on gravel roads and 4x4 trails. Last year, we did a two weeks roundtrip in Iceland, including some of the interior countryside.
We are really thinking to skip Fish River Canyon for that one day, since this is two days of extra driving, and spend more time in Tiras mountains or Naukluft region.

you can trust us living in Namibia or/and frequent travellers. It is something totally different after an 10 hours flight. Relax the arrival day in/around Windhoek!

vielen Dank für Deine Antworten.

We changed our plans and we are going to skip Keetmanshoop, Fish River, and Aus.
Maybe we plan to stay 1 night at Maltahohe (Namseb lodge) and take the C14 towards Helmeringhausen. I don't find any accomodation on the C14. (except for Dabis farm).
We'd like to stay 2 nights in the Tiras mountains (D707) (perhaps ranch Koiimasis). We would like to go horseriding there?!
Then, towards Sossuvlei and the naukluft/ Bullsport. Has anyone walked the Olive Trail or the Quivertree Gorge trail? Wich one is the most beautiful?
3 nights Swakopmund: do you recommend the 'Welwitschia drive'?
3 nights Damaraland (Spitzkoppe/Twyfelfontein)
3 or 4 nights Etosha
2 nights Waterberg

Wie ist eure Meinung zu dieser Route?

Ich habe noch eine Nacht zur Verfügung, die ich noch einbauen kann.

- 2 nächte in Namtib oder Kalahari?
- über Spreetshoogte und Gamsbergpass fahren und 1 nacht in Rooisand or Rooiklip übernachten?
- 1 nacht in Palmwag camping (zwisschen Madisa und Oppi koppi)? Lohnt es 1 nachmittag in Palmwag concession area? (self-drive)

Habt ihr eine Idee wo wir nächtigen sollen?

Wie ist eure Meinung zu dieser Route?

mit der Route ist nichts verkehrt. Ich persönlich finde 1-Nacht-Stopps sinnlos, aber das sehen andere anders. Bei mir wären es überall mind. 2 Nächte... darunter leider aber dann natürlich die Anzahl der Unterkünfte bzw. von dem, was man sinnvoller Weise sehen kann.

Hi Seppukki und Grüße nach Gent!
What many people don't realize is that "staying in a place for one night" means nothing else than:
getting up in the morning, drive a few hundred kms just to arrive by sunset, unpack, dine, sleep and start all over again.

It's a perfect recipe for mental exhaustion.
You will have so many new impressions on your first tour through this vast and magnificent country that your mind may need a little relaxation now and then to let it all filter trough. Otherwise you might lose a lot of those precious moments.

Talking with people over the inevitable sundowner ( 😄 ) will give you hints on what to do in the area and you'll feel sorry instantly that you can pursue none of them 'cause "sorry, we'll be leaving tomorrow morning".
What a waste, in my opinion. Even more so, as you have two 15year-olds with you. Rushing them trough Namibia might mean all they might have seen, heard, smelled and touched may go under in a couple of tweets underway.

Now, who am I to tell you what to do? I am far from having the ultimate truth.
Just voicing an opinion from experience and evryone should do as it seems fit for her and him.
It's only that you were asking for opinions, now that's my 2 cents.

Whichever way you are going to explore Namibia, it will be a lifetime experience for all of you.
So, go at your own pace and enjoy. Just don't complain that noone told you... 😉

Have fun and best regards from a poor man that will go picking grapes again tomorrow, come rain or shine.
But before you pity me, Africa is just four weeks away!

mir wären das auch zu viele One-night-Stopps. Könnt ihr nicht die Nacht in Duwisib weglassen und stattdessen bei Namtib investieren? Und das Family HIdeout ist für eine Nacht auch viiiiel zu schade. Da habt ihr ja nur noch was von am Ankunftstag, weil es am nächsten morgen schon weitergeht. Es lohnt sich dort der morning walk mit dem Guide, eine Selbstfahrertour übers Gelände, eine eigene Wanderung über die Dünen, und es ist auch toll, einfach mal zur Ruhe zu kommen und die einmalig schöne Landschaft wirken zu lassen. Dafür würde ich dann Tsauchab auf 2 Nächte kürzen.

When planning our activities, we start to see that 1 night stops are difficult to combine with our plans.
In Etosha, we believe the 1 night stops are ok, since we drive through from West to East and there the activity is game driving.
We now have a new shedule:

- Windhoek (1 nacht)
- kalahari: Bagatelle (2 nights)
- Namtib (1 night)
- Namib family hideout (2 nights)
- Tsauchab river camp (3 nights)
- Swakopmund (2 nights)
- Omandumba camping (2 nights)
- Madisa camp (2 nights)
- Kamanjab : Oppi Koppi (1 night) , just for the bed and to be early at the Etosha gate
- okaukuejo (1 night)
- halali (1 night)
- Onguma (1 night)
- Waterberg (2 nights)
- Windhoek

We had to skip lots of places we intended to see at first, but this means just 1 thing.... we will need to come back a second time 🤩 🤩 🤩

We are just doubting a bit between 2 nights Bagatelle and 1 at Namtib or 1 at Bagatelle and 2 at Namtib.
That day in Bagatelle we would like to do at least a bit of the Kalahari. On our tour to Namtib we intend to drive the D707 for the scenery, nothing much more planned there.

I don't know Bagatelle, but at Namtib you can do really nice walks in a splendid landscape. Ask for a map or discription otherwise you might get lost.
