nach Abstimmung mit Chrigu möchte ich Euch auf einen Wettbewerb hinweisen, den ich total klasse finde.
Wie viele von Euch bestimmt von ihren Reisen nach Afrika wissen, hängt der Besuch einer Lodge nicht nur von der Unterkunft und dem Essen ab. Besonders wichtig ist die Zeit, die man mit "seinem" Ranger bzw. Guide auf den Game Drives verbringt, denn er beeinflusst sehr signifikant die eigene Erfahrung im Busch. Dabei kommt es nicht einmal immer darauf an, was man wie schnell findet, sondern wie man den "Busch" den Gästen näher bringt. Dazu gehört natürlich das Auffinden der Tiere, aber auch viel Wissen und den Willen, dieses weiter zu geben. Besonders aber auch das Bewusstsein für die Natur zu wecken und zu vermitteln, um auch für die Zukunft diese für unsere Kinder zu erhalten.
So wurde ein Wettbewerb ins Leben gerufen, der die Guides in Südafrika in den Vordergrund rückt:

"Going on safari is something that reawakens everybody’s soul. Whether it is from the constant anxious anticipation or just the beauty of nature’s power and simplicity, a new addiction is created within us.
Many establishments pride themselves on the luxurious accommodation and decadent cuisine on offer which makes up for 50% of the experience but gets 90% of the exposure in magazines, emails and websites. The unique experience of encountering wildlife is enhanced and even sometimes only possible because of the rangers and trackers ability to read the signs and interpret the natural surrounding of the bush. A true professional ranger not only is a competent ornithologist, tracker, protector, botanist, behavioural specialist and inquisitive naturalist but also a patient, well groomed, kind, passionate, selfless and enthusiastic people’s person who dedicates 18 hours of his or her day to creating the perfect wildlife holiday experience for someone else.
The biggest issue that is always overlooked and possibly the most important elements of what a ranger does, is that they are of our greatest ambassadors to our beautiful country. A true professional sees and conveys the positives of what our country has to offer regardless of the situation. They are with international travellers all day for years on end, generating a colourful, warm and encouraging image of our country and secondly being amazing custodians of our greatest heritage as born Africans…our wildlife. They resurrect the truth that lies within all of us of our responsibility to protect and learn from our natural wildlife around the world. Our very valuable guests leave with two strong mental and emotional changes; a refreshed and inspired perception of our beautiful South Africa and a desire to spread the word about the need to cherish our wildlife, because of what it can offer us as people. This, I think, deserves more recognition than what is happening to the people that deserve it."
Vielleicht hat der ein oder andere Lust, diesem Wettbewerb zu folgen. Im Moment werden noch Bewerbungen entgegen genommen. Aus diesen werden dann von einer Jury die 20 besten Kandidaten ausgewählt und nach Johannesburg eingeladen. Dort werden die Kandidaten von den Direktoren der "Field Guide Association of Southern Africa" interviewt und 8 Finalisten ausgewählt.
Diese 8 Finalisten reisen in das Bateleur Eco Safaris Camp im Timbavati und werden dort 4 Tage praktisch "geprüft" und von einer fachkundigen Jury "getestet" bis der Sieger feststeht.

P.S.: Nur noch eine kurze Anmerkung, da mein Kollege Mike Karantonis maßgeblich an diesem Wettbewerb beteiligt ist, habe ich zuvor mit Chrigu abgestimmt, dass ich auf diesen Wettbewerb hinweisen darf. Mike liegt dieser Wettbewerb sehr am Herzen, da er selber jahrelang als Guide in Phinda tätig war und so natürlich ein besonderes Verhältnis zu seinen Kollegen hat.
