Spiking N4/R104
Last night there were multiple vehicles spiked on the N4. Majority of the spikings were between Solomon Mahlangu and Simon Vermoten, with one reported East of Solomon Mahlangu. We would like to advise all of these incidents, altghough most on this group have seen the warnings before.
Modus Operandi.
Suspects place either metal spikes, rocks or other objects hidden in refuse bags on the road, aiming to damage your vehicle, forcing you to stop and investigate. Once the victim stops, the armed assailants come out of their hiding, a few hundred meters from the objects. The suspects would approach the vehicle and rob the victim of belongings. Suspects will return to the bushes and try and target their next victims.
Extrodinary Circumstances
On a few occasions the suspects fired multiple shots into the victim's vehicle and there has been multiple injuries including a few fatalaties. Suspects are always armed and dangerous. There have been reports of victims being taken into the bush and forced to transfer money using cashsend.
Hot spots in our Area
1. N4 between Renosterfontein and Donkerhoek turn off
2. N4 Between Solomon Mahlangu and Simon Vermoten
3. R104 Close to Sammy Marx museum
4. R104 Close to the quary
Please note it occurs anywhere along N4 and R104 in our area.
Other Hotspots
1. N1 North anywhere from Proefplaas up to Polokwane
2. N4 East up to Carolina
3. N4 West around Brits
4. R513 Close to Cullinan.
Target Victims
The spiking is indiscriminate and any vehicle from public sedans, School Busses, Security Vehicles and even Police vehicles have been spiked.
Times
Most Vehicles are spiked between 20:00 to 23:00 but incidents have been reported up to 06:30
Law enforcement
SAPS, Metro, Private Security, CPF's and Trac have partnered to try and stop this crime trend. Lakes Security Forum has done multiple operations to apprehend these suspects and will continue to do so.
There has been one suspect arrested recently outside Brits and another shot dead by his victim. Suspects were also arrested outside Komatipoort.
What to do.
1. If you fall victim to spikings, remember to never stop the vehicle even if the situation is scary. Keep on driving at a low speed till a point of safety. You can replace a wheelrim, but you cant replace your life.
2. Without stopping phone 112, your Security Company.
How to avoid
1. Try and avoid driving through the hotspots areas after dark.
2. Always observe for objects in the road.
3. Share your live location with family or friends
Most important and repeated on purpose, never stop if you get a flat on N4, N1 or R104. Get to a point of safety and then change the flat out.
3. Use live location to send to your family so they know your whereabouts.
