Racial motive suspected in arson attack
An alleged racially-motivated arson attack has destroyed equipment of more than R100 000 on a new organic vegetable farm in Genadendal.
The irrigation piping and fencing were torched overnight on Thursday, just days after the leader of the community's transformation committee allegedly had an altercation with a white investor - the only person who has invested in the land since the community was given access to it.
The Pallingat farm is part of a parcel of land the Moravian Church gave to the state to keep in trust for the Genadendal community.
The farm, which is leased to community members Paul Oliphant and Johannes Arendse, was largely fallow for a decade, while Oliphant and Arendse allowed the community's cattle to graze on the land.

The irony is that the Bill was introduced and promoted by the supposedly pro-capitalist Mbeki faction. The African has an inherent and unfailing ability to poke himself in the eye.
In the little dorp where I have a week-end cottage the poverty is getting worse and worse because of the unwillingness of the locals to do any work for decent wages.
The municipal managers ( an oxymoron if ever there was) float around in fancy cars and eat take-away chicken out of cardboard boxes behind closed doors in their offices. The streets are disintegrating, there is litter everywhere, and many of the locals are drunk at 10:00 in the morning.
I wanted to develop a few erven by erecting houses for city folk to be able to rent for short stays. I was not allowed to buy those erven because the policy of the municipality is that the previously underprivileged should be encouraged to acquire those erven.
Of course the result is foregone... the erven will be bought by city managers and then immediately on-sold at profit to people like me but I am no longer a willing buyer. therefore, no development.
And the poverty gets worse.

House robberies soar
The reign of terror unleashed on South Africans in their homes by gangs of armed thugs is worsening dramatically.

Residential robbery is up by 14,5 percent nationally, according to the police's 2007-2008 crime statistics.

'SA land not for foreign buyers'
Cape Town - Foreigners may soon no longer be able to own South African property, and will instead have to settle for leasing land, if legislation that's been three years in the making is implemented.
Thozi Gwanya, the director-general for the department of land affairs, says a policy which regulates ownership of land by non-South Africans is currently being developed and is necessary in the interest of sustainable development.

Statement issued by the Freedom Front Plus September 8 2008

A farm and holiday resort near Brits in the Northwest province which was expropriated in January 2008, lies neglected while equipment and water pumps are being stolen.
Carcasses of animals which died as a result of thirst lie around everywhere. A bush bucks` remains lies in a toilet where it had tried in vain to relieve its thirst. Previously it had been a very busy holiday resort where water troughs had provided animals with water.
Mr. Andrew Gerber, FF Plus member of the Northwest Legislature, who visited the farm with the previous owner, says it was a gruesome picture to see. He says it boggles the mind that there could be people who act in such a way.
The FF Plus will be asking a question in the Legislature of the MEC to determine who the current owners are of the farm. The owner(s) should be charged for the abuse of animals.
It appears as if nobody had visited the farm again after January 2008. Furthermore, no fire belts have been made as prescribed by law. The terrain has a fence around it and if a fire should break out, the remaining animals will burn to death as there are no escape paths for them.
This is just yet another example which shows that the government's land reform plan is a hopeless failure. Productive farms and holiday resorts which had previously brought in tax for the government now lie wasting away.

It is quite incredible how recipients of land reform and expropriated land are being set up to fail. From what I understand, the failure rate is about 80%. No training, no experience, setting settlers up on uneconomic units, no cash flow, no professional support and plenty political interference. A toxic mix indeed. So if political targets are met, you can forget about food security. Hopefully USAID will still be around to pick up the shortfall.

Vor einiger Zeit wies ich darauf hin, dass Malawi Mugabe mit Maislieferungen unterstützte. Ich wurde darauf hingewiesen, dass Malawi eine Superernte gehabt hätte und meine implizite Unterstellung, dass der Präsident Malawis eher eine Hungersnot seiner eigenen Bevölkerung in Kauf nähme, als auf die Unterstützung eines Mörders zu verzichten, wurde von Einigen schroff zurück gewiesen. Nur wenige Monate später scheint sich die Situation ein wenig anders darzustellen:

The report states that the high- risk days for armed robberies in August were Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, with the worst days for cash heists being Saturdays and Mondays.

ATM attacks were worst on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

High risk times for armed robberies were between 9 and 11am and 6pm and 7pm, while ATM attacks usually take place between 5 and 12am.

The worst day for violent crimes at malls was August 19, followed by August 2, 3, 10 and 25, with four attacks on average taking place on these days. The report does not explain why the specific crimes are prevalent on the given days.

Weapons used include AK-47s, shotguns, handguns, knives, explosives and angle grinders, with criminals often resorting to violence, especially at service stations which often fall victim to repeat attacks.

SA still has institutional racism – report

Welch ein Treppenwitz:
Hätte Richter Nicholson in PMB sein – ohnehin längst überfälliges – Urteil zum Zuma-Verfahren nur 10 Tage früher abgegeben, hätte Mugabe in der entscheidenden Phase der ZIM-Verhandlungen seinen wichtigsten Protegée Mbeki verloren, und die Verhandlungen wären für Tsvangirai wohl anders ausgegangen!
Da ZIM-Vereinbarungen ohnehin eine („unworkable“) Totgeburt sind und im Augenblick schon wieder im Streit gestoppt wurden, wird Old Bob, z. Zt. bei der UN in New York, sicherlich recht unruhig auf dem Stuhl rutschen: Zu Hause läuft’s nicht gut, der Umbau fängt erst an und die Gewalt ist noch lange nicht gebannt.
Künftige Vorgaben zu ZIM werden von einer neuen Mannschaft der ZA-Regierung entschieden. Das kann allerdings noch dauern, denn im Augenblick setzen sich schon Mbekis Kabinettsmitglieder ab, um bei der Neuverteilung nicht zu viel Mbeki-Stallgeruch mitzubringen. Viel aktive Politik, außer dem gegenseitigen Bekriegen innerhalb des ANC, ist bis Ende des Jahres wohl nicht zu erwarten. Gerade jetzt, wo wirtschaftliche Turbulenzen von außen (USA) die ZA-Wirtschaft bedrohen, wird der Spielraum von T. Mboweni (Notenbankpräsident) und T.Manuel (Finanzminister) weiter eingeengt durch eine Regierungskrise. Die designierten neuen starken Männer aus der Zuma Fraktion sind noch alle unerfahren und werden zunächst ganz andere (private) Interessen haben als das schlingernde Schiff zu steuern.
Armes ZA, es hätte es besser verdient: Neuer Exodus und neuer „brain drain“, das kann sich das Land nicht leisten!

Auf der anderen Seite muss man auch Zuma letztlich vor allem an seinen Taten im Amt beurteilen.

p.s. Falls jemand sich fragt, warum der ANC den Präsidenten abrufen kann: Das steht so in der Verfassung. Der Präsident hat die Beschlüsse der Partei umzusetzen und kann auch ohne Neuwahlen „zurückgetreten werden“.

Wenn man in der Verfassung nachliest, dann hätte Mbeki eigentlich nicht zurücktreten müssen. Der Präsident wird von der Nationalversammlung gewählt und kann von dieser - wenn wichtige Gründe vorliegen - mit Zweidrittelmehrheit wieder abgewählt werden. Erstens ist fraglich, ob formal ausreichende Gründe (z.B. schwerwiegendes Fehlverhalten) vorliegen. Zweitens hat der ANC rund 70% der Sitze in der Nationalversammlung. Bei der Kampfabstimmung zum neuen ANC-Führer hat Zuma nur relativ knapp (mit 58,5% der Stimmen) vor Mbeki gewonnen. Knapp 58,5% Zuma-Befürworter von 70% ANC-Sitzen in der Nationalversammlung bedeuten dann erst mal nur 41% der Stimmen. Das ist weit weg von den notwendigen zwei Dritteln für die Abwahl. Entweder muss der gesamte Rest des ANC sich auch noch gegen Mbeki wenden oder alle anderen Parteien in der Nationalversammlung gegen Mbeki und somit für Zuma stimmen. Da schon allein die Democratic Alliance mit ihren 12,4% das sicher nicht tun wird, fällt zumindest letzte Option schon mal weg.

Update: Zuma kann trotzdem erst nach den regulären Wahlen 2009 ins Amt kommen, da für die Präsidentschaft nur Mitglieder der Nationalversammlung nominiert werden können, was Zuma derzeit nicht ist. Es wird also wohl für ein paar Monate einen Übergangspräsidenten geben.

All very bad news for SA, things are going to get really bad.
It is not easy to see how the ANC can get things right. Over the last 14 years the country has crumbled and service delivery has plummeted at all levels under the ANC government. Incompetence is accepted by the ANC thus complete failures in housing, health, employment and crime control have become the norm while the media report ANC corruption almost daily. There is no accountability or acceptance of fair and reasonable criticism by the ANC. They are racist in their BEE policies and generally white people are fleeing and taking their much needed skills elsewhere. The blacks seem to welcome this as they seem to dislike whites. Now the blacks are fighting among themselves and history tends to prove that they will destroy each other and in the process everything else the country has built up. One faction is even calling out to kill all opposition while it's leader continually calls for his machine gun presumably to do just that - kill people. And so South Africa sinks down to Zimbabwe like levels. Will the UN help those stranded in the midst of the chaos? One hopes so.

Have we failed the Party?
The crisis of capitalism and the challenge of building socialism in South Africa

Socialism will only come about through honest, hard work. What does this entail? Among other things:

constantly developing Marxist theory so that that it begins to offer real answers to the current crisis of capitalism, in the form of clear policies, programmes and campaigns. We must spare the ANC, SACP and COSATU no privilege, but we must also ensure that we are honest and accountable in our critique.

Our diversions are our collective diversions;
re-building a strong, united, progressive movement with a disciplined and democratic party of the working class and the poor at its core. We need a renewal of strategic trade unionism that is non-racial and relevant. We need to focus more on single issue campaigns. The reality of life in our organisations is that it is boring, gender insensitive, boorish, full of bravado.

We need to socialise our organisations;
recruiting and politically educating individuals and instilling socialist values in them to ensure they are in the forefront of democratising the state, disciplining capital, running the various organisations of the working class and the poor, such as trade unions, community based, single issue and non-governmental organisations. Most importantly, such cadres need to be in the vanguard of socialising our society. There is a dearth of cadres who are ready to teach the next generation.

Investing in people is the most important investment we can make;
engaging the working class and the poor in regular and relevant campaigns that teach disciplined mass mobilisation and techniques of working among the people that ready the working class and its allies for political power.

We must socialise society;
strengthening socialist values by being in the vanguard of behaviour that seeks to unite progressive people, counters factionalism, conspiracy theories and gossip. The party must fight the system, not the people. It must learn and teach the art of revolution. Transparency, honesty, accountability, a service ethos, and fairness are all important.

Der Karikaturist muss sich auf jeden Fall keine Gedanken um seine Zukunft machen. Der ist wirklich erstklassig. Zuma mit Duschkopf ist immer wieder genial.

Der Machtkampf innerhalb des ANCs erreicht dieser Tage seinen Höhepunkt. Statt langer Worte gibt es die nächsten Tage nur gezeichnete Kommentare von Zapiro, Südafrikas bestem Karikaturisten. Zapiro wurde 2006 übrigens von Jacob Zuma wegen Beleidigung auf 15 Millionen Rand Entschädigung verklagt…

aber nur mal zum kurz nachdenken: auch wenn wir alle denken, dass Inhalte im Internet umsonst zu haben sind - sie sind es nicht! Inhalte kopieren und woanders veröffentlichen ist nicht erlaubt, auch nicht mit Quellenverweis, auch nicht, wenn es woanders gemacht wird! Ausser natürlich, man hat das Einverständnis, es ist public domain oder eine sonstige Form, die das Vervielvältigen mit Quellenangabe erlaubt(dass gilt übrigens auch für längere Textpassagen, das verbitten sich gerade Zeitungen ja ausdrücklich).

Das habt ihr sicher bedacht, so detailliert wie hier recherchiert wird, sonst kann es unter Umständen mächtig Ärger geben, aber das ist sicher bekannt. Aber wo kein Kläger da eben auch kein Angeklagter, ich wollte es nur mal zu Bedenken geben.

Womöglich hast Du sogar recht;-)
Aber keine Sorge, ich bin locker, wie gesagt, wo kein Kläger, da kein Angeklagter, aber von Zeit zu Zeit kocht das Thema immer mal wieder hoch und dann ist das Wundern gross (wobei die Poster am wenigsten von Problemen betroffen sein sollten).

glaube mir ich kenne mich in dieser Sache recht gut aus, aber ernsthafte Karikaturisten zu denen "Zapiro" zweifelsfrei gehört, sind nicht "nur" am komerziellen Erfolg interessiert, sie wollen das ihr Gedankengut in die Welt hinausgetragen wird - oder irre ich mich?!
