We rented a car from Namvic, near the airport of Windhoek. The person picking us up was punctual and friendly. He explained everything he considered important about the car to me - thoroughly. I had a good feeling!
So here's what went wrong - let's start gently.
1. The car steered to the left by itself quite a bit - which is quite annoying (and a little unsafe) when you travel a daily average of 400km.
2. The second fuel tank of the car (to extend its range - included in our package) hardly filled up. So we had to rely on the one tanks capacity and stop at every fuel station. Again - annoying but managable.
3. The satellite phone that was included in our package ran out of battery sometime within the second day. We were not given a charger. We avoided going to some places due to this as the cellphone reception is non-existant in remote areas and we had no chance of getting found or calling for help if anything happened. (Being fair I have to say the company reimbursed me on this issue - and ONLY on this)
4. The car started without a problem. But about 6 seconds later it died - no matter what we did. Then it took many seconds (12-20) of turning the key while pumping the gas to get it started again. So whenever we were in an even slightly remote place I did not dare to turn off the engine, fearing it won't start again - and as mentioned we had no satellite phone.
5. This is a big one and the reason for the title. We had a tent on our roof, which we packed, tightened and securely fastened after every use. On the seventh day of our journey, going somewhat between 110 and 120 km/h on a tarmac road (legal speed) - the tent including the steel beam supporting it just ripped off the roof of our vehicle. We were VERY lucky that no car was driving behind us and no pedestrians were nearby. This construction is heavy and could have easily killed someone. The tent was destroyed on impact.
Now here comes the big part:
Namvic made ME pay for the damaged tent, claiming it was in my responsibility. I should have checked whether it was loose every day (I was not told to do so by the guy explaining everything else - nor did I have the tools to do so) and could have prevented this issue.
So I guess Namvic expects me to have superman strength and tighten all screws and nuts with my bare hands.
On top of this Namvic made me pay for picking up the tent from the road-side as well. All in all we paid about 9600 NAD (709 USD) for this issue.
This is not where it ends.
The guy at Namvic told me not to worry as I can easily reclaim the money from the credit card company (as I paid by mastercard). Clearly he told me this to keep me calm, make me pay and leave. Problem solved - for him.
Now I paid a huge amount of money for renting a terrible, unsafe and unreliable car. This absolutely killed my mood and partly ruined my whole vacation (Namibia is an amazing country, worth a visit!).
I truly recommend renting your car somewhere else when visiting Namibia. I don't want anyone else to go through this and waste so much money and nothing but trouble.
I am not exaggerating or making things up - I have the police reports, Invoices for destroyed tent, etc available on request.
Sad story, but worth typing for 10 or 15 minutes if this prevents other people from going through this.
