Dear weather-watchers,
As we are witnessing weather records breaking around the world in these days, we had a share of these ourselves..:
Swakopmund
• Swakopmunders will not easily forget the unrelenting east winds of June 2022, particularly Monday 27th of June, which was the dustiest east wind storm of the past 22 years (see bottom of page 6). This dust storm caused damage along the coast, with walls and fences blown over and some buildings unroofed.
• This dust storm was preceded by an unusual spell of ‘winter rain’ as a cold front struck the coast, leading to localised flooding in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay (see top of page 6).
• June also saw the longest streak of 11 days of uninterrupted east winds in Swakopmund since I began recording weather. This streak toppled the previous record of 9 days of continuous east wind in July of 2004.
• On the 29th of June I measured the strongest ever east wind gust of 66.1 kmh in Swakopmund since my measurements began.
• These powerful east winds made June 2022 the warmest, and by far the windiest June of the past 22 years, and the windiest month overall by far (see page 2).
Windhoek
• Windhoek broke the record of the coldest June of the past 22 years, jumping thereafter to one of the warmest July’s.
• Although Windhoek was unusually cloudy this winter, no rain made it to the ground.

The El Nino Southern Oscillation forecasts of Monday 8th of August still look promising for the coming rainy season in that a prediction of a moderate strength La Nina still remains in place (pages 3-5). However the La Nina peaks around November/December, which is rather early. After November/December the La Nina is predicted to weaken fairly rapidly. This could impact the second half of the rainy season and could cause the rains to drop off earlier than normal. It appears that the three year long spell of La Nina’s that we have benefited from could be coming to an end after this coming rainy season, and so I would advise the farmers to be cautious going forward.
In the next circular I will look at the Indian Ocean Dipole forecast as well.

Another cold weekend is looming for Namibians as temperatures are set to drop significantly in the south from Thursday, spreading to other parts of the country over the weekend. Predictions by Afri Weather indicate that the minimum temperatures in Windhoek will drop to one degree Celsius on Friday and to zero on Saturday, while daytime temperatures will be just above 20 degrees. ...

Ich glaube die Erongo hat da was missverstanden. Sie schreiben ja selber, dass der La-Nina-Effekt guten Regen bedeutet. Dieser ist anfangs stark und lässt dann nach. Demnach gibt es erst Regen und dann sinken die Chancen. Nicht umgekehrt. So hatte ich es ja auch vir Kurzem von Geophysiker Klaus-Peter Knupp hier gepostet. Kleine Regenzeit soll gut werden (also BIS Dezember), große Regenzeit dann aber womöglich nicht (AB Dezember).

In Windhoek war gestern zwar dicke Bewölkung aber kein Regen. In der Namib (u. a. bei Ababis) hat es aber örtlich ergiebigen Niederschlag gegeben. Heute in Windhoek bisher keine Wolke zu sehen.

Yesterday’s (12th of September) El Nino Southern Oscillation forecasts (pages 6-8) show:
a. A weak La Nina is still in place at the moment, but rapidly disappearing from December onwards and heading into neutral territory and beyond by about May 2023. All by its own, this would translate into a wetter ‘small’ rainy season (Oct – Dec), but a normal-to-drier main rainy season (Jan – May). Note though that the ‘small’ rainy season is itself very unpredictable and can sometimes fail altogether (more below).
Today’s (13th of September) Indian Ocean Dipole forecast (page 9) shows:
b. That currently the IOD is strongly negative and recovering to neutral by February. So the IOD is not supportive of rain until at least February.
Added together, the negative IOD is likely to put a damper on the ‘small’ rainy season (which might fail as a result), while the dissipating La Nina puts a damper on the main rainy season, even though we are fortunately not quite moving into El Nino territory as yet. Overall my estimate would be an average to below-average 2022-2023 rainy season for Namibia.
Lets count ourselves fortunate tough that we have been spared a true El Nino now for three rainy seasons in a row (the last El Nino being 2018 -2019). An El Nino event releases enormous amounts of heat into the atmosphere and brought us both heat and drought in the 2018-2019 season. Given that the last three La Nina’s have given us relatively cool and wet summers, we need to both mentally and physically prepare for the next El Nino, when it decides to come. Climate change is likely to exacerbate the heat we must prepare for in this event.
