A million people in KZN are going hungryhttp://www.iol.co.za/index.php?art_id=vn20081016055911850C585080
In Newcastle, Red Cross workers came across two unemployed relatives who were so desperate for food that they were eating cow dung wrapped up in leaves just so they could get something into their stomachs.
This real-life story, right here in KwaZulu-Natal, is one of numerous tragic stories of desperation surfacing across the province as food prices continue their upward spiral.
The harsh but stark reality is that 1,2-million people in the province face a lack of food and are living on less than R200 a month.
According to the last recorded statistics in the provincial agriculture department's spatial economic development strategy, 5,3-million of the province's citizens are classified as "living in poverty".
Areas that have been particularly badly hit are the three district municipalities of Ugu, Zululand and Umgungundlovu, and the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park region.
This emerged from the department of agriculture's Agrarian Revolution Programme and Strategy (which includes a food aid programme).
Speaking at The Mercury Highroad board meeting in September, Mtholephi Mthimkhulu, the MEC of agriculture and environmental affairs, was confident that the strategy would address the needs of the poor, but said there were other factors influencing the food crisis that were beyond the government's control.
"Food prices are escalating at unaffordable rates. Since December 2007, food prices have continued their upward spiral, and these increases were even higher in the rural areas where many poor communities are affected.

DA members assaulted, another meeting disrupted by ANC – Moodeyhttp://www.politicsweb.co.za/politicsweb/view/politicsweb/en/page71654?oid=107117&sn=Detail
Two DA members have been hospitalized after being severely assaulted by people said to be ANC members in Davyton on the East Rand .
In the second assault in two months, people identified as ANC members hacked and chopped local DA branch chair Colin Mdluli and branch secretary Thokazani Mhleko at the Mogoba informal settlement this morning. The attackers apparently used a spade, a pick and an axe. They also burned down Mdluli's shack.

How bad is the situation? Let's have a look at some key indicators.
Let's look at life expectancy at birth. I think you'll all agree this is a rather fair indicator.
Of the 193 countries reported, we rank in the bottom 5 when looking at the improvement of life expectancy at birth. The life expectancy at birth has decreased by 12 years from 1990 to 2006. By the way, all the other countries that performed worse than us are SADEC members. So today, it's gone from 62 to just over 50 which is a decrease of 12 years and those are the WHO figures. The CIA fact book estimates 42 years.
The global trend is that of an increase in life expectancies of 4 years, from 63 to 67. The Japanese are at 83 years. Africa, as a WHO region, has remained stable at 51 years for the last 16 years. This implied that most of Africa has improved and South Africa has worsened. This brutal regime of Zimbabwe has caused the life expectancy of its women to drop from over 60 to 34 in 18 years. The men are expected to live up to the ripe old age of 37.
Infant mortality rates: The infant mortality rate in South Africa has deteriorated from 45 to 56 infant deaths per 1000 live births over 16 years and ranks at 188. It's important to know that the deterioration has accelerated from 5 in the first 10 years to 6 in the next 6 years. Once again it should be noted that Lesotho and Swaziland are included in the 7 bottom ranked countries.
Let's look at the prevalence of TB per 100 000 people. South Africa ranks l77 in terms of, so called, "improvement". We have not improved. In 1990 there were 774 cases per 100 000, in 2006, 998. Again note that Lesotho and Swaziland are in the bottom ranking.
Let's look at the prevalence of HIV adults amongst adults aged 15 to 49. In 2007, South Africa had the fourth highest HIV prevalence in the world. Between 2001 and 2007, the prevalence increased from 16.9 to 18.1. At a time during which most other countries stabilised, Swaziland is the worst, Botswana second, Lesotho, then South Africa and I dare say, I do not trust Zimbabwe's figures at all because they are below us and they have miraculously improved from 26% to 15%. I do not believe that.
We Africans are really the ultimate consumers. We consume our infrastructure, we consume our forests and we consume our wildlife. We actually consume our children's future. Now in South Africa, are we a lot better off, or are we not showing signs of this African malaise?

Opposition parties protest legislation to disband corruption fighting unit
PARLIAMENT (Sapa) - The demise of the Directorate of Special Operations (DSO), or Scorpions, drew closer on Thursday when legislation to disband the unit was approved in the National Assembly amid vehement opposition.
Koos van der Merwe of the Inkatha Freedom Party said "the murder of the Scorpions" was reckless political expediency to protect ANC leaders and members from criminal investigation and possible prosecution.
"The decision is the result of a Communist take-over of the ANC at [its] Polokwane conference," he said.
"The communist take-over is switching on many red lights for the future of this country and especially for democracy."
The ANC wanted the Assembly to rubberstamp the ANC's Polokwane conference decision and ignore the merits and outstanding successes of the Scorpions.
This had been crystal clear right from the start, Van der Merwe said.
"It is also clear after Polokwane who now really governs South Africa --the SA Communist Party."
The Democratic Alliance's Dianne Kohler-Barnard reminded the House that the Khampepe Commission, under Judge Sisi Khampepe, had "told Parliament to keep the DSO under the NPA".
"The Cabinet endorsed that report and its recommendations in June 2006," she said.
"But when the reality of that ruling became apparent, the country then learned to its horror that when reality doesn't suit the ANC, it thinks it can overrule a judge."
She predicted that the Scorpions advocates, forensic auditors, and specialist investigators -- none of whom ever wished to be in the police -- would not join the new SA Police Service unit.
"Law enforcement agencies all over the world are utterly delighted that these experts are on the market and will no doubt snap them up," she said.
Jackson Bici of the United Democratic Movement agreed the bills were a product of the ANC's Polokwane conference, "motivated by a dubious political agenda".
"A barrage of lies and distortions were uttered about the DSO before and after Polokwane to justify this unwarranted and dangerous attack upon one of the few working crime-fighting and corruption-busting institutions," he said.
"It seems that the campaign to elevate one person to the highest office in the ANC and the land will proceed no matter what the cost.
This entire parliamentary process has been an ill-disguised sham."

Leaders must instil tolerance or SA will be the world’s front-page casualty…http://www.thetimes.co.za/Columnists/Article.aspx?id=870745
I despaired this week as I watched an ANC mob behave like Zanu-PF thugs at Orange Farm. The seeds for such conduct were planted months ago, when ANC leaders allowed thuggish behaviour to take root in the party.
There was that rally on June 16, when ANC youth leader Julius Malema exhorted his followers to kill for Jacob Zuma. He was followed, some days later, by Congress of South African Trade Unions big cheese Zwelinzima Vavi, who echoed the teak-head’s statements.
Not long thereafter, the youth were chanting “kill for Zuma” at congresses and rallies.
The ruling party’s response: “It is all taken out of context.”
This week, at Orange Farm, they were chanting: “ Kill Lekota. Kill Shilowa.”
The ruling party’s response was to label the incident as “unfortunate”.
It was a wholly inadequate response to something that should be seriously worrying the country’s leaders.
…
The bottom line is that if the ANC fails to instil tolerance, the news coming out of the republic over the next six months will go from bad to worse. And we will find ourselves on the front pages and prime-time bulletins, with our election being covered for violence rather than for its democratic spirit.
Now we don’t want that, do we?

Anger over 'shoot to kill cops'http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2420193,00.html
Badplaas - Badplaas police have asked the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) for help after accusing an ANC councillor and member of the Young Communist League (YCL) of inciting their members to "shoot to kill" police officers.
The threat was reportedly made at a Young Communist League (YCL) meeting in Badplaas on October 18 where a memorandum protesting against alleged racism at the Badplaas police station was handed over to station management.
Badplaas police commissioner Charles Marivate said the police had been compelled to ask the SAHRC for protection after YCL secretary Sibusiso Radebe and ANC councillor in the Albert Luthuli local municipality Pro Khoza had explicitly threatened local officers with physical harm.
"I myself was threatened that if I supported my white officers, I would be out of the window. The threats against the other officers were worse," said Marivate.

There were also staff shortages.

More policemen were murdered in the eleven years after the advent of democracy in SA in 1994 than in the eleven years preceding SA's political transition, the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) said on Monday.
"The research found that between 1983 and 1993, about 1 152 policemen were murdered. Between 1995 and 2005, a staggering 1 894 were murdered," the Institute said.
This indicates an increase of 64 percent," said Kerwin Lebone, the Institute's researcher who compiled the statistics.

What do you think about the split in the ANC? Most people around here are delighted because they think that this new alliance has a good chance of blocking Jacob Zuma from ascending to the Presidential throne. I wish I also shared positive thoughts about it but speculate that this is the beginning of real political turmoil in this country with long lasting consequences where political opponents will now commence behaving in ways similar to what we have witnessed in the media in Somalia and many other war torn countries of this continent - I predict that these political parties will resort to violence and commit political assassinations and shootings and bombings etc....making the taxi wars seem so petty and frivolous.Und der letzte Satz ist der, auf den es ankommt, denn nahezu nirgends auf diesem Kontinent ist es je zu einem friedlichen Machtwechsel gekommen.
Knowing his background, I just cannot see or visualize Jacob Zuma and some of his loyal and very militant supporters allowing the new opposition to make too many inroads or even vaguely threaten their chances of winning the next election - I really believe that this is going to turn ugly, the consequences of which will be felt right across the board and not just confined to the townships as most naive whites tend to think or imagine. We must remember that the vying political parties will embark upon a campaign to ensure that the Police and military are on their side - same with the judiciary and anything else that can be used as a lever to promote or try and safeguard their interests - this process will undoubtedly undermine law and order and the general state of this country....and the country will undoubtedly do a steep and uncontrolled dive and descend to goodness knows what levels of chaos and misery.
I wish I could be more optimistic.... but with the best effort I just can't... because I know Africa and its ways.
Moin Volker,Hallo Yoshi,

'Time to start panicking'http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=13&art_id=vn20081108081551829C603045
When the water was cut off in parts of Johannesburg a month ago, many people asked: Is this the water crisis we've been expecting to follow the electricity crisis?
Homeowners in the leafy northern suburbs could use water from their swimming pools to flush their toilets and wash the dishes.
Residents of high-rise blocks in Hillbrow, who had to struggle up the stairs with water containers, were less fortunate.
Happily, the problem was manageable. Roadworks had damaged mains pipelines which fed large parts of old Joburg, and supplies were interrupted while repairs were made. But it was a wake-up call for residents that they can't take their water for granted.
Now water professionals are warning that it is indeed time to start panicking.
About the past decade, municipalities have focused on expanding infrastructure to previously unserved communities.
They now face the challenge of upgrading their old infrastructure, which will take big money and strong management.
But the real challenge will arise when there is no longer water to put in the pipes. And if a crisis does develop, it will be because politicians don't pay enough attention to water.

He ostensibly also refused to allow white members of the Norkem Park police to search the suspects' car and called them "white dogs".

A government committee says that about one-hundred-and-fifty people have been killed since the beginning of last year, with twelve murders in the past six weeks alone.
Correspondents say the attacks appear to be motivated by robbery but that white farmers believe the crimes are part of a campaign to drive them from their land.

Moin zusammen.
