'Capitalists, not foreigners are the enemy' South Africa's working class was turning its anger against immigrants instead of the "true enemy", the capitalists, socialist organisations said at a march held by the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Ethnic cleansing, SA style In an interview with The Sunday Independent, Ronnie Kasrils, the minister of intelligence, conceded that talk of "sinister forces" and "orchestration" had been "misguided" and that "socioeconomic" factors were clearly at the root of the attacks on Zimbabweans, Mozambicans and other Africans. "Some of us were clearly caught out. Anyhow, I accept that we have had a spontaneous outburst of xenophobia here - and I don't know why people have trouble with that word: it's accurate for what's going on. I liken it to the anti-Indian mayhem that erupted in Durban in 1947. "The trigger there was that a little boy allegedly stole an orange from an Indian trader, who then slapped the boy in the face. And those were times when food prices had just gone up and people were suffering economic pressure. The same as now. "You can't divorce what's happening with food prices, for example, from the present anger. Nor can you divorce all the other economic and financial factors and policies. I accept that the squatter camps are tinder boxes just waiting to explode." But this was not to say, Kasrils added, that there were no other forces at work.

UN's World Cup warning Further outbreaks of violence against immigrants in South Africa could lead Fifa to move the 2010 World Cup elsewhere, the UN adviser on sport has said.
The Despots' Democracy In late April, about the time this e-mail was written, President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa -- Zimbabwe's influential neighbor -- addressed a four-page letter to President Bush. Rather than coordinating strategy to end Zimbabwe's nightmare, Mbeki criticized the United States, in a text packed with exclamation points, for taking sides against President Robert Mugabe's government and disrespecting the views of the Zimbabwean people. "He said it was not our business," recalls one American official, and "to butt out, that Africa belongs to him." Adds another official, "Mbeki lost it; it was outrageous." It is also not an aberration. South Africa has actively blocked United Nations discussions about human rights abuses in Zimbabwe -- and in Belarus, Cuba, North Korea and Uzbekistan. South Africa was the only real democracy to vote against a resolution demanding that the Burmese junta stop ethnic cleansing and free jailed dissident Aung San Suu Kyi. When Iranian nuclear proliferation was debated in the Security Council, South Africa dragged out discussions and demanded watered-down language in the resolution. South Africa opposed a resolution condemning rape and attacks on civilians in Darfur -- and rolled out the red carpet for a visit from Sudan's genocidal leader. In the General Assembly, South Africa fought against a resolution condemning the use of rape as a weapon of war because the resolution was not sufficiently anti-American.
'Dire' forensic labs let suspects walk Dangerous criminals are walking free because of the "dire" situation in South Africa's forensic laboratories. In a recent case a man suspected of the rape and murder of a two-year-old Cape Town girl was freed because the DNA evidence against him was botched.
The Expropriation Bill would enable the Land Affairs Minister to expropriate land “in the public interest”- a term broad enough to equate to the whim of the Minister. The compensation payable will be determined by the state and will not have to be market related. By abrogating the principle of ‘willing buyer-willing seller’, this Bill threatens the very bedrock of our economy – the protection of property rights provided for in the Constitution. If implemented, we can expect a sharp decrease in foreign and local investment, as well as capital flight.
The Silent Tsunami Devi Sankaree Govender (Carte Blanche presenter): "Hold on tight - it's going to be a rough ride. Some economists are calling it a 'silent tsunami'. If you own a home, a car or two, even if you have a solid income and you have not yet felt the pinch, top analysts are saying that by the third quarter of this year, you certainly will."

House prices poised to free fall Major banks - Standard Bank, Absa, FirstRand and Nedbank - said last month that loan defaults would crimp profit growth this year on the back of rising borrowing costs. The Reserve Bank has raised interest rates nine times since June 2006.
Tourism stats questioned But 2-million (just over 22 percent) of the 9 million official, annual visitors come from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, while another 3-million tourists come from Lesotho and Swaziland. This means that 5,2-million of South Africa's visitors emanate from four of the poorest countries in the world. The whole of Europe and North America supply only 1,7-million of the country's tourists.
What a new rate hike will mean Geldenhuys said there had been a 30 percent increase in motor vehicle repossessions while the number of homes repossessed year-on-year (y/y) from April 2007 to April 2008 has risen by 20 percent. New car sales are down by about 28 percent because of the higher interest rate cycle and credit laws making it difficult for consumers to obtain finance. Nominal house price growth slowed further in May this year to a level of 4,3 percent y/y, the lowest price growth since late 1999, Absa says.
Food prices beyond our control, says Zuma The rising cost of food was a time bomb that could result in uprisings, ANC president Jacob Zuma told the World Economic Forum on Africa on Thursday.

Robert Mugabe's militia burn opponent’s wife aliveThe men who pulled up in three white pickup trucks were looking for Patson Chipiro, head of the Zimbabwean opposition party in Mhondoro district. His wife, Dadirai, told them he was in Harare but would be back later in the day, and the men departed. An hour later they were back. They grabbed Mrs Chipiro and chopped off one of her hands and both her feet. Then they threw her into her hut, locked the door and threw a petrol bomb through the window.
SAA's R81m bill In April, figures supplied by Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin in response to a parliamentary question revealed that 7 868 luggage items belonging to SAA passengers had been reported missing from airports in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London in the three-month period between December 1, 2007 and February 29 this year.
Pebble Bed With alarm bells ringing around global warming and Eskom's spectacular failure to anticipate our power needs, many believe that the solution to the problem lies in nuclear technology, nuclear technology that is being developed right here in South Africa. Jaco Kriek (CEO: PBMR): "This could be a breakthrough for South Africa, like Sasol." Professor Steve Thomas (Professor: Greenwhich University): "I would pull the plug as soon as possible." Alec Erwin (Minister: Public Enterprises): "Of course it has risks, but it's also has massive opportunities, that's why government is proceeding with it." Martin Welz (Editor: Noseweek): "It is, to put it shortly, just simply outrageous." Ten years ago Eskom and the South African government decided to get into the business of building and selling nuclear reactors to the world.
However, in educative, corporate and governmental Southern Africa, more advanced strategies are often employed, such as:
1. Buying a stronger whip. 2. Changing riders. 3. Appointing a committee to study the horse. 4. Arranging to visit other countries to see how other cultures ride dead horses. 5. Lowering the standards so that the dead horse can be included. 6. Reclassifying the dead horse as 'living impaired'. 7. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse. 8. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed. 9. Providing additional funding and / or training to increase dead horse's performance. 10. Doing a productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse's performance. 11. Declaring that as the dead horse does not have to be fed, it is less costly, carries lower overheads and therefore contributes substantially more to the bottom line of the economy than do some other horses. 12. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses.
And of course ... 13. Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position!
If you understand the above, then you are obviously a South African.

Aktuelle Zahlen wären also zum Vergleich interessant.
Doch was macht sie?
Game reserve fences cut down Fears for the future of one of KwaZulu-Natal's best-known game reserves have intensified with more than 2 000 people marching into the reserve to clear farming plots after having smashed down the park's entire eastern boundary fence. The 10 000ha Ndumo reserve was proclaimed in 1924 and has been subjected to a protracted series of land claim negotiations for the past decade, culminating in a ceremony earlier this year when community ownership was recognised officially - subject to the condition that it would remain a game reserve and no physical occupation of the land would occur.
SA living 'beyond its eco means' Conservationists have identified South Africa - along with several other African countries - as one of the countries on the continent that is increasingly living beyond its ecological means.
Cosatu to protest against rates in July South Africa's powerful labour federation, Cosatu, will demand lower interest rates as part of a planned protest campaign and one-day national strike next month, it said on Friday.
SA has one of the highest interest rates South Africa has one of the highest interest rates in the world, and one of the weaker currencies. ... "The main risks to the inflation outlook emanate from the possibility of further electricity price increases which will be announced next week by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), petrol and food price increases and the exchange rate."
South Africa: going south But it is also a warning. South Africa itself is in trouble. The powerhouse of Africa is running out of power. Fourteen years after the end of apartheid, such a judgment might seem harsh. The country has avoided a race war. Its growth rate in recent years has been an impressive 5 per cent. Tourism is holding up, as are exports. The country has won global sporting renown and been rewarded with its selection as the venue of the next World Cup in 2010. But even as the stadium girders go up and concrete is poured for a high-speed rail link (see page 47), fears are growing within the country and outside that the showcase event will be overwhelmed by the violence, political tensions and infrastructure failures that point to alarming social, economic and political breakdown. ... Despite welfare grants to 12.5 million people, poverty is growing; violent crime rates, including murder and rape, remain among the world's highest; and a savage new xenophobia has unleashed urban violence on many of the five million immigrants, including around three million Zimbabweans. The infrastructure is creaking, the health service has almost collapsed and power shortages have led to blackouts, with devastating consequences on vital mining industries.

'Expropriation Bill threatens SA' ... - It will seriously damage the economy by undermining domestic and foreign investor confidence. It will empower the state to expropriate any property (not just land) for any purpose it deems in the "public interest". Security of ownership of private property is a fundamental requirement for all successful economies; - It will threaten South Africa's food security. Most of the farmland that has thus far been expropriated has experienced substantial declines in production. Successful food production requires large-scale farming, large capital reserves, high levels of technology, and extensive experience and training; ...
Postal theft infuriates Amazon Rampant theft by Post Office workers has infuriated internet retailing giant Amazon so much that it will no longer send goods to South Africa by post, Business Day has reported. Anyone wanting to order directly from the US-based website must now pay for a private courier service adding about R420 to the price of a DVD. No one from the Post Office would comment. No other African country’s postal service had been blacklisted by Amazon, Business Day said.
SA's municipal accounts in a mess JOHANNESBURG - The financial records of many of South Africa's municipalities are in such a poor state that the Auditor General's Office is unable to express an opinion on them. This emerges from the results of the audits by the AG of 247 out of 283 municipalities in South Africa.
ANC ANC is facilitating the mass theft of tax payers money by allowing this to happen. This is making Service Delivery close to impossible and putting a strain on growth and development. In this environment, job creation and poverty alleviation is impossible, while crime remains rampant! ANC is incompetent from the president to the clerk working at home affairs.

Farmers movable property now under threat - TAU SAThe proposed changes to the Land Use Management Act which has been tabled in Parliament underlines the fact that TAU SA was not wrong in its evaluation that the new Expropriation Bill aims at targeting all farmers' assets. The Changes to the Land Use Management Act also empowers the Minister to expropriate farmers' movable property, with only the government authorized to determine compensation.
‘We want food’- Ongombo West settlers WHAT used to be Namibia’s only floral exporter to the European market and a generator of employment for 15 families, Ongombo West, has deteriorated into a local retirement home inhabited by destitute families seeking food handouts from Government.
Mbeki supporters purged from KZN executive The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal cleaned house of any lingering Mbeki supporters in selecting its top five leaders and the provincial executive committee in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.
