Juristen, Doktoren, Mettalurgisten, Ingenieure.....

Coming on top of its R3-billion stake in the Medupi contract, this almost doubles the ANC company’s known stake in Eskom’s capacity expansion programme to about R5,8-billion. How much of this will be profit is not known. The M&G and the Institute of Security Studies’s corruption and governance programme revealed in 2006 that Chancellor House was an ANC business front, set up in 2003 with the sole aim of funding the party. It has investments in mining, logistics, engineering and other sectors.

The new black elites merely replaced the former white colonial elites, but the exploitation of the black masses continued as before as did the exploitation of Africa's natural resources, which were exported to the rest of the world.

SA: Suspected cholera in Vaal River: mass meeting in Parys Saturday

- Hundreds sickened over past few weeks in Vaal River catchment area - mass meeting in Parys this Saturday

- Feb 19 2008 Elise Tempelhoff reports in Beeld newspaper on Feb 19 2008 that many hundreds of people are falling ill with 'serious gastric problems, high fevers and severe vomiting" -- the classic symptoms of cholera -- merely from touching the Vaal River water over the weekend. Many patients reportedly are being 'turned around at death's door' by local doctors merely after swimming in or touching the water.

Since cholera fibrio has been identified as one of the organisms in the river water recently by independent tests, a mass protest meeting is planned this Saturday in the centre of Parys over the issue.

Some locals have reportedly been 'turned around at death's door' by doctors after swimming in the river water at LochVaal.

And many thousands of the poorest residents in the area now have to spend their meagre cash on bottled water -- and are willing to patiently stand in line for hours at shops to buy it, rather than drink the local municipal water of Parys. The local official denies that there's a health crisis developing, claiming that they are just buying bottled water because it's 'fashionable'.

There have also been numerous complaints in the Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark area and tens of thousands of people could now be facing the real threat of a widespread cholera epidemic in this region

The main source of the problem seems to be located in Parys.
For the past two years, raw sewerage is being untreated dumped into the Vaal River north of Parys because the sewerage works haven't worked all that time.
Parys and Vredefort community leader Edward Mafereke said many people are still falling ill from the water because they cannot afford to buy bottled water and have no other water resources.

Matthew Cuzen, whose parents have a home near Lochvaal, said of his friends who had visited him there over the weekend and swam in the Vaal river water, had become 'deadly ill'.

The pollution in the Loch - where the Vaal flows around islands and against the Barrage-bridge -- is 'something horrendous'.
Six of his friends needed medical treatment after swimming there, he said.
Francois van Wyk of Randwater, and manager of the Vaal River Catchment Area, confirmed this week that the water quality at Lochvaal indeed was 'very weak'. That's not what he said in November last year however, when local residents already started complaining that they were falling ill from swimming in the water.

He confirmed this week that it was 'dangerous to even touch the water' there because this is the meeting place of sewerage pipes running from the Riet Spruit into the Loch.
30 km downstream from Parys, sewerage has for the past two years also been dumped in the river - untreated...
Local farm owner Koos Uys who owns an island in the river, said the sewerage works at Parys have been standing 'dead-still' for the past two years.Last December some friends of his had also swam in the river near his island and 'became seriously ill'.
And since then he allows nobody on his island to even touch the river water, let alone swim in it.
However the local ANC-official running the municipality which includes Parys denies that the town has any problems with dirty water whatsoever.

He refused to give his name but said the only reason that the poor were buying bottled water was because it was 'fashionable to do so.'
"Everybody wants to buy bottled water now. I drink the water of Parys municipality. There's nothing wrong with it,' he claimed. Refusing to give his name did not make this statement very convincing, however.
In November last year, the Vaal River was still 'declared safe" by that very same Mr Van Wyk - thus allowing the lucrative "Emerald Challenge Open Water Swim" festival to continue.

Van Wyk had responded to ongoing complaints in the Vereeniging area, after local residents had gathered at the river's edge to air their complaints and fears about the growing water pollution problems.
Resident Claudia Holgate described the sewerage spillage running into the Vaal River as "a crisis" at a meeting of Save the Vaal Environment held in the Vaal river Barrage.
"I say it is a crisis because anyone drinking the water, anyone watering their cabbages with the water, any livestock drinking the water could be affected ... it affects all animal life from insects up to otters and birds. Because of the loss of bio-diversity, we will have to do something now," said Holgate.

However, a senior engineer from the department of water affairs and forestry Hugh Sessens said at this meeting last year that 'providing a long term solution to the spillage problem at the Vaal would take about six years.
"It is not something one can do quickly," he said. Members of the media and the municipality were also present.
He said then that "despite infrequent pollution incidents, the water holds minimal risk for swimmers".
So what has changed since November 2007 to make the Vaal River so dangerous that swimmers are falling dangerously ill now with symptoms which are suspiciously similar to cholera?

High interest rates of 11% - introduced by the Reserve Bank to curb inflation - have helped reduce consumer debt but have also put a damper on economic growth and further cooled foreign investment in South Africa.
Lack of confidence
This capital outflow has caused further concern about South Africa's large current account deficit and further weakened the rand. The deficit, which reached a 25-year-peak of 8.1% during the third quarter of 2007, has been funded by foreign buying of local stocks and bonds.

AFTER bathing in the warm, fuzzy glow of the Mandela years, South Africans today are deeply demoralised people.
