"Construction is set to begin soon on the Serengeti International Airport. The location for the new airport will be the town of Mugumu, approximately 25 miles from the northwest border of Serengeti National Park.
Government officials recently confirmed that Paul Tudor Jones, a US billionaire investor who operates a number of upscale lodges in western Serengeti, agreed to finance the construction. Authorities say it will help Tanzania reach its goal of doubling its tourism by 2015.
The airport has many conservation organizations concerned. But there is still confusion over the scale of the project. While government officials say it will allow direct flights from overseas, others close to the project say it will be a small airport that will accept flights from Kenya and within Tanzania. Stay tuned"
