ETOSHA FIRE UPDATE: Ministry staff, NDF and community members continue to battle wildfire flare-ups in Etosha National Park. Strong winds caused the wildfires put under control on Monday morning to flare up spreading around the Halali area towards the southeastern boundary of the park.
Etosha Deputy Director Naambo Iipinge says  the active fires remain relatively small and manageable but still poses a risk to the park and surrounding areas due to the unpredictable speed of the wind.
As of Wednesday, preliminary assessments show that the total burned area is 2,587 square kilometres of the park. A full size will be provided when the wildfires are fully extinguished.
Controlled burning carried out by the Ministry in previous months is helping to reduce the extent of the flames. Teams remain on the ground monitoring and mopping up while establishing the full extent of the affected area, including any possible impact on wildlife. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.

ETOSHA OCTOBER FIRE: The Ministry has been battling veld fires in various parts of Etosha National Park since Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Close to 80 staff are on the ground attending to the active fires with the help of the NDF members, neighbouring conservancies and farms staff. Notably, some fires have been extinguished in Halali, Rhino Drive, Rietfontein, //Khurus, Charachas and Harib.
However, strong wind speeds of 20km/h and temperatures as high as 45°C observed in the park on Saturday may cause the active fires in some areas to flare up. These areas include Gemsbokvlakte, the Southern boundary and Aus-Homob. At Aus-Homob, the fire has been partly contained. All areas with full and partially active fires are being attended to ensure that the flames are fully contained.

Considering the above, Etosha Deputy Director Naambo Iipinge urges visitors, residents and staff in Etosha to observe road closures, avoid driving in smoke, keep safe distances from active fires and avoid igniting fires or smoking in the Park.
Preliminary figures show that the fire this month has affected 926 square kilometres, representing 4% of Etosha. Last month, 2,587 square kilometres (12% of the park) were affected by fire, bringing the cumulative area affected during the current fire season to 3,513 square kilometres or 16% of the park.
Last year, fires affected 37% of the park.
As of Saturday, 24 October 2026, no human or wildlife casualties had been reported. The public is urged to follow instructions from park staff to help prevent fires and contain the spread of active fires, thereby safeguarding the environment, wildlife and human lives.
