Namibia _ May/June

Hello! Here am I again. 🙂
First of all, happy New Year to all of you and best wishes for your next trip to Namibia!
And now just to inform you we'we booked our fly with LTU from mid May to mid June. So we have started to plan our route in detail. But before that we should decide what car should we take, whether to go with one of 4x4 variante(with tent on the roof) or use a Camper Van (for two person from KEA or some similar, i.e. bushcamper from other agency). For the time being we would prefer to use camper van (motorhome). Namely, we had a great experience using it while traveling through New Zealand and our feeling is that in this time of the year the nights in Namibia are cold and it would give us more comfort. But we are not sure if this choice is going to be OK in Namibia. Especially taking into account the gravel roads. So I will be very gratefull if anybody who was traveling with camper van from Kea or other could share his experience with us. It will be great if you could suggest also the route that will best suite drive with the camper van(or which route/places to avoid due to bad driving conditions). As we have enough time to travel around our wish is to see the following destination:
- Hardap Dam,
- Fish River Canyon,
- Orange River,
- Aus
- Nubib Mountains,
- Sossusvlei,
- Swakopmund,
- Skleton Coast,
- Damaraland,
- Kaokoveld,
- Epupa Falls,
- Kunene River,
- Etosha National Park,
- Waterberg Plateau
- maybe some other you could suggest as "must see".

Are all campsites suitable for camper vans (water, gray water, electricity, etc.) and is it obligatory to stay at campsite or is it possible to overnight off the road, too.😮

Hi Bibka!

congratulation for choosing Namibia as your holiday destination. You will like it.
I can give you the advise to take a station wagon(Landcruiser) or a Doublecab with roof tent and or an iglutent as well.
You will enjoy travelling with these kinds of cars much more than a motorhome.
You mentioned already the gravelroads.
with the motorhome you can only drive very slow.

Hallo Bibka,

I agree with Joerg using a 4x4 DC or station wagon if you want to go to the remote areas of NAM. For the south it might be more comfortable to have a camper. The last four km at Sossusflei a 4x4 is required. No change to go by 2x4. So if you don't want to visit remote areas of the Kaokoveld and the most beautyfull places on the Kuenene (Marienfluss and Harmanns Valley)a camper is ok, although the rough conditions on the gravel roads will be of a little challange.
The camp sides are not in all cases equipped with water and elecricity like it is usually found in New Zealand. Normal camp sides do have shower and toilettes but you can also find some with no facilities at all. Beside that it is allowed to sleep for one night somewhere in the bush as long as it is not a private ground. Kaokoveld offers only a few camp sides and depending on your route you might not find a camp side every evening. At farm areas (fenced)you have to ask the farmer. Normaly they are very friendly and will allow you to stay for one night or more.
On your travel list I'm missing Bushmanland. A beautyfull area with only few tourists and in my oppinion an absolutely "must".

thank you all for your information and suggestions. After some research we decided to take Toyota Hilux 4x4 single cab with roof tent. Party for the good offer and partly for the reason camper van for two were sold out. So, now we hope it (the car namely) will give us as much as comfort and hopefully there will be no rain in that time of the season 🙂 .
Now we are starting to plan our route in more details to be able to make reservations of camping sites in advance ( school hollidays are till 25th of May, so probably the reservations are necessary, are they?). So I'll be glad to receive any informations about "must see places" and rest camps on the route, according to our general route I disclose in my previous letter. Our primarly interest is not as much to look the animals (sure we will do that also, but elephant and black rhino definitly only from fare distance 🤩 ) but most of all the country, the places with some historical meaning, people etc. Our tour will start from WDH to south and then slowly up, to Sceleton coast and probably to Bushman land if there will be enough time to visit everything. We are planning to stay at certain place at least for two day as we think just overnight isn't enough to get the feeling of the place. We are thinking also to take a one day tour (by aireplane)to Popa or Victorian Falls, is it price worth (agency ?). I've read that reservation to National parks must be done for two month in advance, any experience with that?
