In einem Info-eMail von AMREF Flying Doctors wird dazu Folgendes geschrieben:
'As of October 2, 2024, the Rwandan Ministry of Health has confirmed 36 cases of Marburg Viral Disease. Twenty-five patients are currently in isolation undergoing treatment, and 11 have died. This is the first time a Marburg outbreak has been reported in Rwanda. There were cases of Marburg in Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea in 2023, and in Uganda in 2017.

Confirmed cases of the virus have been reported in seven of the country’s 30 districts. Enhanced surveillance measures are in place across Rwanda, with strict hygiene and contact precaution protocols in hospitals. Healthcare workers are the most affected by the current outbreak.

Yesterday, the Rwandan Minister of Health announced that the country is “about to start vaccine and therapeutic clinical trials to protect high-risk groups,” without specifying the vaccines and therapies to be used.

The U.S. Embassy in Kigali asked its employees to work remotely from September 30 to October 4, 2024. All in-person services at the U.S. Embassy during this period are suspended, including American Citizen Services and visa interviews.

AMREF Flying Doctors Position Statement

Our assessment classifies the situation in Rwanda as high risk, with a high probability of escalation due to possible undiscovered cases. We are still performing Medical Evacuations for non-Marburg cases in and out of Rwanda, with enhanced pre-medevac screening and heightened surveillance at entry and exit points for all cases moving to other countries from Rwanda.

We are capable of evacuating confirmed Marburg cases in isolation chambers, subject to approval from the receiving health ministry and hospital. The Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi has confirmed that they will accept confirmed or suspected Marburg cases.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates if there are any significant developments.

Dr. Joseph Lelo
Medical Director'
