AIRLINK FIRST SOUTHERN AFRICAN AIRLINE TO TRIAL SECURE DIGITAL IATA TRAVEL PASS

28 October 2021, Johannesburg – Airlink, the privately-owned Southern African airline, will become the first carrier in Southern Africa to trial the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Travel Pass, a secure digital smartphone app for passengers to provide accurate information on their COVID-19 health status and access the entry requirements of any countries they intend visiting.

The trial will be carried out on Airlink’s flights between South Africa and Namibia during November 2021.

Airlink operates flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to both Windhoek and Walvis Bay.

The IATA Travel Pass is being developed to support the re-opening of borders without quarantine and safely restart international aviation and tourism. It is more secure and efficient than current paper processes used to manage health requirements (the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, for example).

In the Airlink trials, the IATA Travel Pass will confirm pre-departure, that passengers meet the COVID-19 test requirements for travel with Airlink on flights between South Africa and Namibia.

“Airlink is proud to be collaborating with IATA in this crucial initiative. The adoption of secure, digital health solutions such as IATA Travel Pass for verifying COVID-19 test and vaccination certificates as well as pertinent entry requirements is urgently required to eliminate the uncertainty that currently deters international air travel and by extension, business, trade, tourism and the creation of desperately-needed jobs throughout Southern Africa,” said Airlink CEO and Managing Director, Rodger Foster.

“Our collaboration with Airlink and the South African and Namibian authorities demonstrates a shared commitment to provide a digital solution for passengers to manage their health requirements for travel. This will help promote the safe restoration of international air travel within Southern Africa and between the region and its markets in other parts of Africa and around the world. Through IATA Travel Pass trials we aim to demonstrate how digital solutions can effectively manage both COVID-19 vaccine and test certificates and set an example for other governments in the region to follow,” said Nick Careen, IATA, Senior Vice President Operations, Safety and Security.

Airlink customers flying on those routes will be able to download the IATA Travel Pass app from the Apple Store or from Google Play. Currently it can only be used when travelling with airlines participating in the trials.

As this is a trial and subject to adjustments, passengers should still carry printed copies of their negative COVID-19 PCR test results on their journey.

The following laboratories are participating in the trial:

South Africa
DNAlysis, iMed, Indalo Bio, FlowPath Laboratories, Inception Biosciences and MDS/mi-LabTest in Pinetown and Westville

Namibia:
DiagnoLab and Namib Laboraties Windhoek and Swakopmund

The IATA Travel Pass app provides:
• Governments with the means to verify the authenticity of tests or vaccinations and the identity of those presenting their certificates;
• Airlines with the ability to provide accurate information to their passengers on test requirements and verify that a passenger meets the requirements for travel;
• Laboratories with the means to issue certificates to passengers that will be recognized by governments;
• Travelers with accurate information on test requirements, where they can get tested or vaccinated, and the means to securely convey the results/certificates to airlines and border authorities.

IATA Travel Pass has been undergoing development since 2020 and is being tested by airlines and government authorities in several other parts of the world.

South Africa's Airlink gains Namibian 5th freedom rights
https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/120648-south-africas-airlink-gains-namibian-5th-freedom-rights

AIRLINK TO LAUNCH “SKYBUCKS” FREQUENT FLYER PROGRAMME

23 February 2023, Johannesburg – Airlink, the Southern African premier airline, will launch its Skybucks frequent flyer programme on 01 March 2023, enabling its customers to earn rewards on its flights and redeem them against future travel and other Airlink purchases.

“Since Airlink became a totally independent carrier in 2020, we have been inundated by customer requests and suggestions for a unique Airlink loyalty programme. We have spent the past year researching, planning and developing our compelling new Skybucks programme. It enables our loyal customers to earn a rand value percentage on every flight and to redeem Skybucks on their next flight as a form of payment to more than 45 destinations in 13 sub-Sahara African countries, including Madagascar and St Helena Island,” explained Airlink CEO and Managing Director, Rodger Foster.

There will be four Skybucks membership tiers, with eligibility determined by the number of sectors or leg of a journey flown in 12 months (a typical Johannesburg-Durban-Johannesburg return ticket comprises two sectors).

• Blue Tier is for customers who have flown less than 18 sectors.
• Red is for 18 to 34 sectors.
• Emerald is for more than 35 sectors.
• Black tier membership is by invitation. only.

Each tier earns rewards at a different rate; the higher the tier, the more Skybucks are earned for the same flight at the same fare.

Initially, Skybucks can also be used for full or partial payment of air tickets (excluding statutory taxes and charges) and upgrades. Additional offerings and rewards will be announced as they are added to the programme.

Skybucks will be valid for 18 months from the date of the last activity, but it will be possible to extend their validity before they expire. They are also transferrable between members, and families of up to eight members can pool their Skybucks.

Customers will receive 1,000 Skybucks (Sb10 is worth R1) upon enrolment during March 2023. The enrolment process can be completed on www.skybucks.co.za.
Customers who have flown sufficient sectors with Airlink in the three months prior to becoming a member, will be eligible to move to a higher tier by furnishing the Airlink booking reference (a six-character code), ticket number, flight number and date of travel; as well as the departure and destination airports for the sectors previously flown.

If for any reason, a journey is not picked up by the system, members have 90 days from the date of flight to retroactively claim their Skybucks.

Tier membership is valid for 12 months, except for customers who will be automatically progressed to the next tier once they have flown the required number of sectors within that time frame.

“Besides providing a great added value loyalty programme for our customers, in doing so, we are also taking every measure to safeguard customer data privacy and are using servers situated in the European Union to manage the Skybucks membership information. As a result, data management and security will be compliant with both the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA),” assured Mr Foster.
