Hi guys,
First of all sorry I'm writing in English. I can read and understand German, but writing is still quite difficult…. 🙁
This year we're making our 5th trip to Namibia and I always find a lot of useful information on this forum. I hope you can help me out this time.
We want to make a trip to Damaraland and Kaokoland, including driving Van Zyl's pass and some riverbed / 4x4 trails (e.g. Khowarib Schlucht). And yes, we have a lot of 4x4 driving experience in Africa (Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Uganda 🙂 ). We have good experiences with Savanna car rental. But when I informed about the rental and insurance conditions they said the following:
“Set out 4x4 trails are allowed – driving in the Kaokoveld is at your own risk.” and
“The vehicle is allowed on marked tar roads, gravel roads, but not allowed for instance on the Van Zyl’s Pass.”
In this forum I read a lot of reports of people driving the same route in Damaraland and Kaokoland (and who also rented a car with Savanna). Are they just taking the risk? And if something goes wrong at the Van Zyl's pass you don't have any insurance at all? And is there a rental company who allows you to drive Kaokoveld and Van Zyl's pass?
