Gamchab Tal und Google Earth

Hallo Fomis

Bin im Mai 2010 wieder für 3 1/2 Wochen im Süden Namibias unterwegs und hätte noch zwei Fragen:

Weshalb kann ich in der neuesten Version von Googel Earth die T4 Tracks nicht mehr einblenden, weiss das jemand?

Ist jemand vor kurzem von der D316 aus Ais Ais kommend zur D212 am Oranje durch das Gambach Tal (Trockenflussbett) gefahren oder fährt die Strecke in kürze und kann mir einen ungefähren Zustandsbericht der Strecke durch die Schlucht geben, bin mit einem 4x4 Hilux unterwegs. Es ist mir schon klar, dass dies auch jederzeit je nach Witterung ändern kann und ich mich sowieso vorher noch kurz vor Ort schlau machen muss. Es würde mich aber trotzdem schon jetzt interessieren.

besten Dank für dein Feedback, ja die Strecke ist wirklich gut in Google Earth erkennbar.

Früher konnte man jedoch in Google Earth die T4 Tracks aktivieren, war so glaube ich von Africa4Tracks, dies geht heute nicht mehr, weiss jemand warum.

Zudem würde mich der aktuelle Zustand der Strecke interessieren, von jemandem der diese vor kurzem gefahren ist oder in naher Zukunft noch fährt un mir ein Fedback geben könnte.

Google reorganisiert offensichtlich die ganzen Layers in Google Earth. Betroffen davon ist auch das T4A Layer.

You have no doubt noticed that T4A roads layer disappeared from Google Earth. The POI layer under the Gallery will also disappear at some stage in the near future.

Google is reorganising the way they make layers available on Google Earth and the message we received was that in essence most of the gallery will disappear and be moved to the Google Earth Gallery web site. None of this is good news to us.

So in response to this we have embarked on an ambitious project to setup our own web maps. If you think about Google Maps or OSM web maps, then you get an idea of what we are aiming for.

The project has 3 aspects to it:

1. Setup a web map service which will be capable of serving T4A maps as an API service, similar to that of the Google Maps API.

2. Setup a web page that would serve up the T4A maps as well as other sources of data, e.g. Google Earth image.

3. Integrate Padkos website into the web map allowing for an interactive experience between the maps and the underlying data.

We hope to have phase 1 of this project completed in May 2010. Then we would like to settle this architecture and collect input from you as users before we move onto phase 2 later this year.

Phase 2 would involve optimising the service as well as introducing a routing engine. This is when things will start getting exiting. We hope to customise the existing open source routing engines to suit our requirements and introduce some interesting routing parameters that would allow for an entire new way of doing trip planning which will be introduced in phase 3.

The tools we use will all be open source and the code we are developing will be put back into the open source pool. We hope this will stimulate more people to come up with creative ways to bring control over navigation software and devices closer to the users.

There are more and more web map services being deployed and we hope to be able to integrate some of these into our new web map. For instance, Madmappers already have 1:50k rasters on such a service and although I believe there are some technical difficulties to overcome we would like to explore bringing these in as layers on the new web site.

Similarly we know that the web maps service we are deploying could in fact serve up KML as well, making it possible to view our data on Google earth. We will look at ways to make this available to T4A users, but first we need to get the new web site up and running.

OSM Integration (und kml nebenher?) das hört sich doch schonmal ziemlich gut an ! mit OSM endlich eine gute Plattform und mit kml die Problematik der fehlenden Satellitenbilder gelöst.

On March 19, we made some changes to the Google Earth layers panel intended to make browsing easier, particularly for casual users of Google Earth. While we're excited about our new "Places of Interest" layer, with more descriptive icons, we've heard many complaints from some of our most loyal users and acknowledge that we made some mistakes in this release, which we are working to address as soon as possible. In particular, we realize we have taken away some important features, and we are working on returning those to our users shortly.
