Schön langsam könnte man überlegen, den Spruch "FREE AS A BIRD" in "FREE AS AN ELEFANT" umzuändern.

The the coasting elephant is at it again. Two weeks after we collared the swakopmund elephant in Omaruru river, last night he walked back to the coast through Swakop River again.


This morning he was found at long beach hearding towards Walvis Bay.


Our staff members have since stopped him and are trying to guide him back. They have managed to guide him along the Swakop river as far as Rossmund. The elephant is currently South of Rossmund in the river where is will stay for the night.


We appeal to the residents of in that area to be cautious and alert at all times when going to the river especially at night.


In the past week the elephants has made numerous attempts to leave the omaruru river towards Henties bay and each time our staff have driven him back to the river.


It is our intention to guide the elephant back to omaruru river, alternatively we will capture him should there be need.


We urge people to stay clear of the elephant as the authorities work towards returning the elephant to Omaruru river safely.


Please help us to spread the message to residents of Rossmund and nearby areas.

The Swakopmunf elephant is still in the Swakop River near Rossmund.

The decision is to let is stay there and monitor it, perhaps it will do well there. There is sufficient vegetation to feed on and water to drink.

We appeal once again to people to stay away from the area to allow the elephant to settle in, also to avoid aggravating the elephant.

The elephant has been peaceful up to now and it's our intention to assist this elephant find a home.

We will monitor the elephant continuously and react as the situation dictates. For now the elephant is home.

SOME residents of the Rossmund golf estate are eager to keep the young elephant bull that came back to the coast for a second time since Chritsmas Eve in the Swakop River in their midst.
Since officials from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism shepherded the elephant back to the Swakop River on Sunday the elephant has found a temporary home in the wetlands a few hundred metres from houses on the estate.
The spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Romeo Muyunda confirmed on Monday afternoon that the elephant is still in the Swakop River and that a decision has been taken to allow it to stay there while it is closely monitored by officials.
“There is sufficient vegetation for the animal to feed on and plenty of water. Perhaps it will do well in the Swakop River,” Muyunda said.
According to Muyunda the elephant has been peaceful since reaching the wetlands of the Swakop River and he said it is the MET’s intention to assist the animal to find a home.
“We appeal to people to stay away from the area to allow the elephant to settle in. People should avoid aggravating the elephant. We will monitor the elephant continuously and react as the situation dictates. For now the elephant is in its new home.”
Most of the residents at the estate and other coastal towns welcomed the news that the elephant will be allowed to stay in the river.
Some were worried that keeping a constant eye on the elephant will wear out the officials and even suggested that a petition should be drafted to inform authorities that the coastal towns welcome the elephant and that residents are willing to partake in safeguarding residents as well as the animal.

Swakopmund has a new resident!!

The Ministry has decided to let the young bull elephant currently in the swakop river to stay and possibly settle there.

The elephant has twice found it's way to the coastal town. It was first seen in the vicinities of Swakopmund in 2019 on Christmas eve.

The Ministry with other stakeholders managed to move it to Omaruru river where we believed it was going to thrive considering that there is good vegetation and water.

To further ensure its wellbeing, in January the elephant was fitted with a satellite collar to enable the Ministry to monitor its movements.

Recently, on Saturday, 08 February 2020, the elephant returned to the coast once again. The elephant went as far as Longbeach moving towards Walvisbay.

Our staff members have managed to move the elephant into Swakop river. The elephant has been very peaceful with no damages or signs of aggression reported.

We hope the elephant will find a home, settle and thrive. This is Namibia's Christmas gift and its wellbeing is our concern.

Das Umweltministerium will den Elefantenbullen, der sich Anfang Februar bei dem Rössmund-Golfplatz nahe Swakopmund niedergelassen hat, demnächst umsiedeln... Demnach ist der Elefant mindestens zwei Mal in dieser Woche das Swakop-Rivier entlang bis in das Stadtgebiet gelaufen. Einmal sei er unter der Brücke hindurch zum Strand marschiert...

The Ministry is finalising arrangements to translocate the Swakop elephant to a more suitable area.

The elephant has unfortunately been reported causing problems, concerns were brought to the Ministry particularly from the management of Rossmund.

Reports include damage to property and threat to people's lives. Unfortunately we are left with no choice but to translocate it to a more suitable area.

The Ministry received two offers to keep the elephant from farm owners, which were considered equally, we chose the most favourable offer. To avoid intimidation and victimisation to the farm owners, we cant give farm details at this point.

The Ministry has in its interest the safety and wellbeing of this elephant. Contrary to assumptions that the elephant will be hunted as a trophy.

The Ministry has demostrated its commitment to ensure the elephant's survival from the very beginning since the elephant appeared in Swakopmund for the first time. We have went to great extents to protect this single elephant.

Also note that, once translocated, the elephant will remain state property. We reject insinuation that the elephant will be hunted as a trophy, these are false and baseless assumptions.

We will be giving regular updates on the translocation and how the elephant adapts to it's new environment.
