"On the evening of Sat 1st January a pioneering elephant decided to make use of the specially designated elephant underpass of the recently opened Mount Kenya Corridor! Since then around 12 elephant have moved through the underpass - 12 days and 12 elephants.It’s been just a few days since the corridor fence was joined to the underpass, and the Ngare Ndare end of the fence was opened. On New Year’s day elephant dung and hay were placed beneath the underpass and that evening the bull elephant, now known as Tony, strolled beneath the specially designed elephant sized culvert, and has since walked back through it again. The underpass allows elephants to move beneath the Nanyuki - Meru Highway or A2, the trickiest bit of the newly formed corridor, which is on Kisma and Marania Farms. The corridor reopens an historical route for elephants moving between Mount Kenya and other conservation areas, which include the Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Borana Ranch. We are indebted to the projects partners and donors for helping us to realize this dream for conservation in the area and believing in this vision. With this wonderful news, and as we continue to work to complete the remaining fences and gates, we expect to see many more elephants taking advantage of the safety of the corridor and avoiding conflict with farmers"
