"The Ministry of Environment and Tourism in Khaudom left for Christmas lunch - and just never came back.
The absolutely shocking state of affairs at the Khaudom National Park: just a few examples of photographs that a friend had sent me of their trip through the park late December.
The dead young elephant bull appeared to have been injured in a fight over water, but there were no Ministry of Environment and Tourism officials on duty anywhere to report this to.
The northern gate was in fact closed as ALL the staff disappeared over Christmas - whether to spend time on their farms right next to the park, or being recalled, I'm not sure. All I know at this stage is the deputy director in Rundu who is responsible for the management is in deep trouble - and it is clear why.
Those 'bathrooms' are in that state because all those fittings were being flogged through the back door in Tsumkwe, and no maintenance appears to have been done ever since KfW spent millions up-grading the park entrance and building staff accommodation.
The sign-posting in the park itself is also so bad that anyone following the MET directions is likely to get lost for days in a park that has very few visitors.
What was the point of that?
Tourism is the only economic sector that is still showing a pulse - and this is how you look after the national assets? Just shocking incompetence - and is because the officials always put themselves ahead of their professional obligations and duties.
It is time we have a serious discussion about putting the management of our national parks under private management, because clearly, the MET is not capable of running them as they should be."
