KHUTSE GAME RESERVE (KGR) STILL OPEN DESPITE ONGOING FIRES
Khutse Game Reserve is still open for tourists despite the inferno that has reportedly burned down more than 50 percent of the park.
KGR assistant park manager Johnson Lebotse was quoted by Botswana Television saying the park is still open to tourists.
He also revealed that no animal deaths have been caused by the fires apart from probably the reptiles.
The fires started recently and burned swathes of Khutse and the southern section of Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
Teams from Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism , Botswana Defence Force and volunteers from Kaudwane have been working hard day and night to put out the fires.

DAILY FIRE BULLETIN
08 SEPTEMBER 2021
1.0 Introduction
This bulletin gives an update of fire situation across the country on the 8th September 2021
Please note that the absence of fires simply means that none were detected at the time of the satellite overpass. Fires could have been obscured from the satellite’s view due to cloud cover at the time, or fires may have been inactive/smoldering.
VIIRS = Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite, continuity of MODIS 375m resolution
Fires were detected in eight Districts as per the table below;
No DISTRICT FIRE LOCATION STATUS COMMENTS
1. Central 1. Zoroga Active There are two (Fire) around zoroga area the first fire was detected on the 05 September 2021 and the second one was detected today 08 September. The fires are burning between the areas that has previously burnt. The district is monitoring the situation because the fires are not a threat.
2. Mabesekwa Active New fires detected today 7th September 2021. The fire is burning with low intensity due to low fuel load.
3. Kedia New New fires detected today the 8th September 2021. The District is aware of the fires and it is monitoring the situation. The fires at Nata and Kedia are burning with high intensity
4. Mokoswane
5. Nata
2 North East 1. F/Town New New fires detected today the 8th September 21. The district is aware of the fire and it is monitoring the situation.
2. Molambakwena
3 Ghanzi 1. Mothomelo Active The fire was detected on the 3rd September 2021. The district is aware of the fire and it is monitoring.
2. Chobokwane New The fires were detected today the 7th September 2021. The district is aware of the fires and it is currently attending to chobokwane fire then will move to Kacgae.

4 Kgalagadi
1. Kalahari Trans-frontier Park Active The fire has been burning for almost 3 week since August, 26 2021. The fire has crossed over into Mabuasehube Game Reserve. It is burning with high intensity and spreading very fast due to abundance of fuel in the park and strong wind. Kgalagadi fire team is attending to the fire with assistance from the office of the District Commissioner and DWNP Staff.
2. Zutshwa The fire is burning between Ukhwi, Ngwatle and Zutshwa. It was detected on the 01 September 2021. The District is attending to the fires has a challenge of shortage of resources.
3. Inalegolo/Phuduhudu/ Lokgwabe Active The fire is burning towards Mabuasehube Game Reserve and on the other hand it is burning towards Lokgwabe. It has been active since 31st S
August 2021. Hukuntsi fire team is attending to the fire as it approached a government Artificial Insemination Ranch towards Tshane.
4. Banyana Farms Active Two fires detected on the 05 September 2021. The district is aware of the fires and it is attending to the fires with assistance from Werda police. Part of the fires has crossed over to Southern district around Skhutlane and Mabule. It is still burning on commercial farms. The fires are burning with high intensity and it is spreading very fast.
5. Monong New fire detected today 08 September 2021
5 Kweneng 1. Maboane Active Fires were detected the 7th September 2021. The fires is burning with low intensity.
2. Motokwe
3. Tshwaane New New fires detected today 8th September 2021
4. Tsetseng
6 North- West 1. Around the Okavango delta (Habu, Mawana, Nxamasere, Gunotsoga, Ngarange, Gudigwa , Mokgacha, Etsha 6, and Mokgacha, Samuchima Active The district is monitoring the situation. The fires are not a threat. They are burning slowly with low intensity.
2. Nokaneng Active
The fires has been burning for almost three (3) weeks. The district fire team is currently attending to the fire at Nokaneng
3. Xaixai
4. Sepopa
5. Maun Active The fires were detected on the 05 September 2021. The district is aware of the fire.
6. Tsodilo Active
7 Southern 1. Sekhutlane Active The fires crossed over from Kgalagadi district. The fires are burning on Banyana Farms. There are two fires burning around Sekhutlane. The fires are burning with high intensity. The district was notified of the fires but has indicated that they have challenge of shortage of resources especially transport
2. Khakhea New New fires detected today. The district indicated that they do not have resources to attend to the fires. The fires at Khakhea is burning in the wildlife management area (SO2). The area has abundant fuel therefore it is likely to spread fast and burn with high intensity.

4. Lobatse
8 North East 5. Tati Siding New New fire detected today the 7th September 2021. The fires is burning with low intensity

FIRE DANGER RATING INDEX FOR 9TH SEPTEMBER 2021
The risk of fire occurrence is high in the country as we are in the middle of the fire season.
The wildland Fire Danger Index (FDI) forecast for tomorrow (9th September 2021) indicates dangerous to extremely dangerous conditions for possibilities of fire occurrence over the country. The southern and eastern part of the country conditions are expected to be dangerous to very dangerous. Extremely dangerous conditions are expected in some areas in the northern and western part of the country.
CONCLUSION
DFRR districts offices are aware of the fires. District fire teams for Kgalagadi, Ghanzi and North West are busy suppressing fires that are a threat to life and properties in their respective areas. New fires continue to be detected. The fires at Kgalagadi are very intense and spread very fast due to abundance of fuel and strong winds `
RECOMMENDATION
Fire fighters are advised to be careful when suppressing the fires to ensure that their lives are not at risk. They should also mop-up the burnt areas to avoid fires re-igniting.
Communities are further encouraged to participate during fire suppressions in their localities. They are also advised to be on alert because winds can re direct the fires toward their villages.
District fire teams to continue monitoring the fires and work with communities and other departments to suppress it when the need arise.
