Another mysterious Elephant deaths in Okavango Delta
Regional Wildlife coordinator, Dimakatso Ntshebe has confirmed another report of mysterious deaths in the Mombo concession in the Moremi Game Reserve.
Ntshebe told environmental journalist, Boniface Keakabetse that they received the report of the deaths yesterday. He said they are in the process of dispatching their scientists to the area to investigate. Ntshebe explained that the photographs of the elephant carcasses show that they just collapsed to death and all tusks are intact which rule out poaching. He stated: ' as of now we we don't know whats the cause of death or how many have died. We''ll investigate throughly to get to bottom of the cause.'
However information gathered by this journalist is that some of the carcasses are weeks old while others are fresh.
Last year, 330 elephants died in the Okavango panhandle in what government later explained to be caused by cyanobacteria. But there is no evidence so far that the deaths expirienced right in the middle of the delta are connected to the panhandle ones.

Breaking: Mombo elephant deaths linked to cyanobacteria
Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation, Philda Kereng has hinted that recent elephant deaths in Moremi Game Reserve could be caused by cyanobacteria poisoning as well.
Kereng revealed during her address this morning on Botswana Television that a total of 39 elephants were reported at mombo within Moremi Game Reserve in January and February this year.
A more serious die off in the Okavango panhandle last year killed 330 elephants in April 2020 at the Delta. Government later announced that a water borne bacteria (cyanobacteria) was responsible for causing the massive deaths.
Kereng explained that investigations revealed that this years deaths were also linked to cyanobacteria poisoning adding that more investigations are still ongoing for more conclusive finding.
Further, the minister revealed that in 2021, government will invest in building the testing capacity of the government facilities to enhance detection and turn-around times for wildlife diseases. This is to avoid a prolonged time they have to take to await sample results from international facilities whenever there is a disease outbreak.
