BEWARE OF CRIMINALS DISGUISING AS POLICE
Botswana Police Service (BPS) would like to warn members of the public about fraudsters masquerading as police officers.
The warning follows incidents in Gaborone, Tlokweng, Lobatse, Palapye and Moshupa, where some members of the public were deceived by criminals purporting to be police officers.
A press release from BPS notes that the criminals demanded ATM cards and Personal PINs and in the process withdrew money from the unsuspecting victims’ bank accounts under the pretext that they were police officers investigating some cases in which money was stolen and deposited into the accounts.
The criminals would then disappear into thin air.
The police would like to inform the public that they never demand ATM cards and PINs from anyone they meet in the streets.
The public is therefore advised to always demand a police identity card and if in doubt contact the nearest police station or call 999 or toll free number 0800 600 144 for assistance.
