STAIRCASE MAKES GCWIHABA ACCESSIBLE
President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama on November 25 officially opened the metal staircase at Gcwihaba caves.
The metal steps have eased accessibility to one of Botswana’s tourist attraction sites, located underneath Gcwihaba hills.
President Khama appreciated the developments taking place at the caves and commended the project custodians for the efforts.
He said Gcwihaba caves had potential in attracting tourists and therefore with the staircase, it would mean easy access into the caves.
President Khama said more extensive exploration should be conducted to uncover more caves, at the same time showing the world the beauty that Botswana had in caverns.
He said even after stepping down as President, he would continue to have interest in exploring and developing more caves in the country.
The President also said for him, exploring of caverns started just as a hobby, but today (November 25) it had turned into something beneficial to the country’s economy in terms of tourism.
Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi praised President Khama for his visionary leadership, noting that most things that he did, he was doing them for the benefit of the country.
Mr Masisi said President Khama was always welcome to visit the caves even after leaving office.
An expert in cave exploration, Mr Roger Ellies said Gcwihaba, as the mother cave and its beauty, had influenced the interest in discovering more caves around the area, hence Dimapo caves in Koanana hills in the area.
Currently the cavers are doing their job to ensure easy access.
“The project is unique in the world and Botswana is the only country currently carrying out such a project,” he said.
The Gcwihaba tourism development project is spearheaded by Botswana Tourism Organisation in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism.
Internet sources indicate that Gcwihaba has been part of the Kalahari ecosystem for almost three million years, while it was formed during the Pleistocene age when the area was much wetter and there had been dramatic climatic variations alternating very wet with very dry periods. (BOPA)

Es scheint ja ein richtiges Treppen-Projekt in Botswana zu geben.

Der Präsi war vor kurzem auch bei den Tsodilo Hills und hat die dortigen neuen -wirklich beeindruckenden- Treppen eröffnet.

Gruß
Mabe
