JWANA GAME PARK IN FLAMES
Police in Jwaneng are investigating an incident where a raging bushfire left about 8.4 kilometres of some sections of Jwana Game Park burnt on July 25.
The Station Commander Mr Mogotsi Thelo said investigations were on going to see the extent of damage caused.
He, however, noted that the mines’ operational pipes and cables were not affected.
Situated around the Jwaneng Mine lease area, the park is also one of the town’s tourist destinations.
Given that Jwana Game Park is the home to a variety of animals including Zebras, Wildbeast and some rare predators like the Cheetah, Mr Thelo was thankful that there was space where animals could go to escape the fire.
He urged the public to alert the police on time each time they notice a fire to help extinguish it before it goes out of control. The Jwaneng Town Council Fire Department official Mr Kabelo
Matlhadisa said they were informed about the fire at 1300 hours on that day by one of the security officers.
“The six of us arrived at the incident scene at around 1:17pm hours with two of our light vehicles to help the mine ’s fire department as they were already in action to attend the fire,” said Mr Matlhadisa.
He said the thick vegetation and the strong winds made it difficult to fight the fire explaining that they wanted to bring down the fire from reaching crucial sites.
“We had to wait for some time before the winds could stop so that we could refight the fire and we were able to accomplish our task by 4:45pm,” he said. (BOPA)
