A distressed South African, daughter of parents that are missing in the Fish River Canyon took to Namibian social media platforms in a desperate cry for Search and Rescue Services to help locate her parents.
South Africans, from Franschoek in Cape Town, Trevor burger (63) and his wife, Samantha Burger (50) went on a five day hike in the Fish River Canyon. This marks their second hike in the canyon. The daughter of the couple, Tana Lancaster, also residing in South Africa, started a desperate search on social media for help in locating her parents.
The last message received was on Thursday evening. "My parents arrived on Thursday evening and let us know they arrived to descend on Friday morning. Yesterday was their second day of the hike. We received three distress messages from their SOS device for assistance. Rangers went out yesterday to the location and found no signs of anyone. It has been 27 hours since their distress messages." Tana Lancaster, the daughter of the missing couple told the Namib Times.
Mr Sean Naude of the Namibian Marshall Rangers (NMR) has been in contact with Lancaster since yesterday. Naude contacted the Namibian Police for clearance to put Airwings up. The pilot confirmed to Naude they are awaiting authorisation. Ground teams and Rangers have been searching since yesterday [Sunday, 8 May 2022] and are out searching again today [Monday, 9 May 2022]. "We have the Sheriff involved who is leading a few search and rescue teams into the canyon to find them." Lancaster said.
The Fish River Canyon is the largest on the continent, featuring a ravine 160 kilometres long, up to 27 kilometres wide and in places almost 550 metres deep.
