Foot-and-mouth disease detected in Kavango East

THE Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Forestry has reported an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) with a total of 13 heads of cattle testing positive for the disease.
Agriculture Ministry, Executive Director, Percy Misika stated that the outbreak was detected in the FMD protection zone at the Hoha Village in the Ndiyona Constituency of the Kavango East Region where farmers reported cattle showing FMD clinical signs such as limping and salivation to officials of the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS).
Misika stated that veterinary officials immediately instituted an outbreak investigation that included clinical inspection of cattle, as well as collecting samples for laboratory analysis.
The FMD cases were confirmed by the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Windhoek on 28 September.
Investigations by officials indicated that 13 cattle out of a cattle population in a crush pen of 657 at the Hoha Village tested positive for FMD.
Those 13 cattle were found in 8 kraals out of 23 kraals at the village.
With regard to mitigating the further spread of the disease, Misika stated that temporary movement restrictions or ban of all live cloven-hoofed animals within and out of the FMD Protection zone (all areas north of the Veterinary Cordon Fence or Red Line, except the Zambezi Region and Mukwe Constituency in the Kavango East Region) have been imposed with immediate effect until further notice.
Cloven-hoofed animals comprise of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and wild antelope.
All animal gatherings, including auctions, permit days, cultural shows, and so forth, are also suspended except for the purposes of vaccination.
Slaughtering of cloven-hoofed animals has also been suspended.
Misika further stated that all movement of animals across the Namibian and Angolan International borders has been suspended with immediate effect.
“A number of roadblocks will be set up at strategic points, and members of the public are urged to fully cooperate with the Veterinary and Police Officials. Surveillance teams have been deployed in the regions to establish the extent of the outbreak and farmers are requested to present their livestock for inspection,” Misika stated.
