The Living Deserts of Southern Africa
The deserts of southern Africa teem with life. Ants and elephants, cryptic 'stone plants' and colourful daisies - all exist in seemingly barren wastes. So, too, do cart-wheeling spiders, fog-basking beetles, fruit-eating hyenas, succulent plants with built-in windows, and the still-enigmatic welwitschia. How do they cope with scarce and unpredictable rainfall, temperatures that fluctuate from one extreme to another in a matter of hours, and food supplies that are few and far between?
Barry Lovegrove unravels many of the mysteries associated with life in southern Africa's four desert biomes: the Desert, the Arid Savanna, the Succulent Karoo and the Nama Karoo. He tells an absorbing story of survival, explaining how and why so many plants and insects, mammals, reptiles and birds successfully exist in these arid regions. A respected biologist himself, Dr Lovegrove has compiled much of the information from scientific papers and presents it in a readable style. The resulting book, designed for the serious student as well as for the interested nature-lover, is sure to remain a definitive reference work for many years.
Excellent photography compliments the text, capturing the stark beauty of the bone-dry habitats and portraying their denizens in intriguing detail. Contributing photographers include such wildlife experts as Anthony Bannister, Peter Pickford and Daryl Balfour.
Come drought or flood, the fragile desert ecosystem always seems to adjust and survive. Yet the interference of man invariably disturbs its delicate balance, and in the final chapter Dr Lovegrove gives an objective overview of potential threats to the continued existence of deserts.
