Update on Namibia’s wild horses

Very welcome rainfall of 20mm was recorded recently at Garub and new grass is already sprouting from the soil, heralding new life for the wild horses as the seasons turn.
It’s been a dry summer season for the wild horses of the Namib, with all the horses, especially the mares and foals, having lost condition. For the last two months supplementary feed has been provided by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Namibia Wild Horses Foundation, which tided them over this period. Thankfully this safety measure is no longer necessary and as this area lies in the cusp between rainfall regions, we can also hope for some winter showers.
The foal born in the period 2018/2019 is still alive and well. The foals from the younger generation, born in 2019/2020 have taken strain in the drought. Hopefully their chances will improve as the horses gain condition.
Thanks are due to the many wild horse friends for their generous donations. The foundation requests that gifts should please be channelled through the foundation and that people refrain from feeding the horses directly as, although well-meant, an unfamiliar diet can be detrimental to their health.
We look forward to the Namibs continuing to grace our desert plains and continuing to be a highlight of a journey through southern Namibia.
