"The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) has welcomed the newly gazetted environmental levies, that will affect motor vehicles, tyres and plastic bags.
The levies are captured in a Government Gazette dated 12 August 2019.
Responding to questions sent by Nampa on Sunday, MET spokesperson Romeo Muyunda said these levies mean there will be a reduction in plastic usage in the environment.
“This will also provide funds for managing our environment,” Muyunda said.
The environmental levies for motor vehicle carbon emissions and plastic carrier bags are in addition to any customs or excise levy.
The environment levy charged for petrol vehicles is N.dollars 40 per grams of carbon dioxide the car pumps out per kilometre driven (g/km CO² emissions), whereas for diesel vehicles it costs N.dollars 45 per g/km CO² emissions exceeding 140g/km.
These levies are charged based on the accessories in the motor vehicles namely those fitted with interior parcel racks, foot-rests, magazine nets, coat hooks, reclining seats, arm rests, microphone and radio or cassette equipment, air conditioning with individual controls, pneumatic plug doors, individual reading lights, chemical toilet, wash basin and refrigerator.
The vehicles charged are those with a mass not exceeding 2 000 kilogrammes or vehicles for the transport of 14 persons or more (including the driver), ambulances, hearses, vehicles with motorcycle-type handlebars, six or eight-wheeled vehicles and shuttle cars for use in underground mines.
Additionally, an environmental levy of N.dollars 10 will be charged per tyre for road wheels fitted with tyres and wheel rims fitted with tyres.
Articles for the carriage or packing of goods, of plastics; stoppers, caps, lids and other closures of plastics will carry a levy of N.dollars 0.50 per bag." (NAMPA, 11.8.2019)
