"A Chinese national who departed Hosea Kutako International Airport bound for Johannesburg this morning at 06:40, was bust with 18 rhino horns in his luggage at Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. He was bound for Honk Kong. At this stage, it is not known whether the horns originate from Namibia although experts say it is highly likely as he departed from Windhoek. The horns were in a sealed and wrapped suitcase. He is in custody in Johannesburg and investigations continue." (Eilmeldung der Namibian Sun vom 24.11.2016).

Poachers arrested in Etosha
Rhino wounded by criminals – Veterinarian tries to save the valuable animal

In a combined effort by the Namibian police and staff of the ministry of environment and tourism, six poachers were arrested on Wednesday this week in the Etoscha National Park. “One group of three poachers was arrested during the day with the help of the MET helicopter. Another three were arrested during the night” the minister of environment and tourism Pohamba Shiveta said.
Unfortunately one rhino was wounded in the limb by the criminals. Minister Shifeta said that veterinarians of the ministry treated the animal to try to save its life. It was learned however that the animal had to be put down due to its severe injuries. MET confirmed that the injured rhino was a bull.
The ministry of environment and tourism bought the Airbus Helicopter H125 in June this year. Minister Shifeta then said that the helicopter is needed to combat poaching in the country and that the Chopper will be stationed in Okaukuejo in the Etosha National Park. Since then the H125, which costs 46 million Namibia dollars, has been deployed successfully in the fight against poaching as has been proven again this week.
This year, 76 elephants have been poached in Namibia and 58 rhinos. This was confirmed by the PRO of the ministry, Romeo Muyunda.
Last year (2015), Namibia lost 49 elephants and 127 rhinos due to poaching.
NamPol has taken over the security in all the parks in the country where there are rhinos and elephant. Joined patrols with the police, MET and organizations like SRT and/or communal conservancies are being conducted in areas where rhinos and elephants occur outside protected areas. Most rhinos in the country have been poached in Namibia’s prestige Etosha National Park in the last two years.
A live rhino is worth millions of dollars because of tourism.
In the past, Namibians and foreigners like Zambians and Chinese have been arrested in connection with rhino poaching or the smuggling of rhino horns and ivory.

Von Rosh Pinah zum Kunene...zu Fuß...für die Nashörner




Wir ziehen den Hut vor Dave van Graan der sich vom Orange River zu Fuß zum Kunene aufgemacht hat,
um aufzuzeigen wie schlimm es um den Nashornbestand Namibias bestellt ist, und um Geld für das Anti Poaching Service zu sammeln.
Laut seinem Freund ist Dave heute in der Gegend Helmeringhausen unterwegs, auf dem Weg nach Sesriem.
Dave würde sich jederzeit über ein Schwätzchen oder ein kaltes Getränk auf seinem langen Weg freuen!
